well i had some time and programed one of the CNC mill's and made one of these radius platens. it Recreates a wheel size of 3 feet :D. It is just out of mild steel i think, it was just a scrap i had. it has 2 1/4"-20 threaded holes in the back spaced 3" apart as i had to put them in a thick area. the platen is 8" long and 2" wide. This is a quick prototype of what i will be offering for sale so people could see what thy will look like. thy will be made of Hardened A2 so that thy will handle the belt rubbing on them. What i need to do is get a pass around list together so i can pass this around for people to try out. let me know here on this thread if you would like to try it out. but you need to have a 2x72 grinder  and not just leave it in your shop and forget about it. i would like to get it to a bunch of people to try. so i will pay the shipping to the first person and then that person will pay to send it to the next person and so forth till the last person which then sends it back to me. each of you can even put your name on the back of it as a kinda "I was here" thing. so lets see what you think so far. thanks everyone for the excitement showed in the other thread which got me to do this.

you have a pretty nasty warp in your platen, J...
:D
Looks great. What cutter did you use on this?

I'm ready for one of these plattens. I think 3' diameter is perfect. When do you think you will start making them in batches? Thanks

John Lloyd

im just not sure how i would go about mounting it to my KMG (also i have the old flat platten so that might be different then the new style platten

tho i would like to try it out and 3 foot might just work for me

I need to make a fixture so i can make them a little faster and not waste material. i will make the fixture tonight and see how it turns out. I also need to refine the program a little and make other programs for different size wheels. but a 3 foot wheel looks about perfect to me as well. I will offer them 8" long and if you want them shorter then you can grind them shorter. but if there is demand for a shorter platen then i will wright a set of programs for a shorter platen. right now I'm looking up material cost and its not super cheep.

how long is you platen and what is the bolt spacing. i was thinking that it would mount to a thin backing plate and that would bolt to the kmg. so take off you current platen and make one just like it out of say 1/4" mild steel. and put bolt hole through it for the radios platen and the taped holes for the kmg mounts. so its kinda like an adapter plate. the hole patterning and spacing is still up in the air as i have not got a lot of input on what people need.

just tack weld it on the 4 corners:D

a small weld is easy to take off with a chisel if you need to replace it. I've done a few plates on my platen like that.

I think I'm going to make another one that is 1/4" thick behind the radius instead of like .1 which it is now i think. that way i can put bolt holes where thy need to be to mount straight to the kmg with out an adapter plate.

well really you will only be able to use the middle 40% of the platten so bolt spacing might not be bad

if you have the whole plate out past the small wheels you may run into more drag on the belt then you want (think tracking problems )
