I am gearing up to make some radius platen's. and was wondering if there was other people that wanted some. i going to make them from A2 or D2 and thy will be solid not bent. thy will be heat treated and milled with the desired radius. with 2 threaded holes on the back. thy can have any radius you want and be as thick as you want. just thought i would put the word out.

While I know what you are talking about I think a pic of the item might be in order for the others.

Basically this platen will simulate a larger wheel. like say a 4 foot wheel or even a 14" wheel. it all depends on how shallow of a hollow grind you want. I think most Japanese kitchen knives are ground on like a 4 or 8 foot grinding stone. also this platen will have the edges radiused so when you do your plunge cuts a J weight belt will make a perfect radius as it fallows the edge radius of say 1/8" or so. i am excited as these will be hardened and polished so thy will slide the belt very easily. What i need to know is how to platens attach to the KMG, i thought it was with just 2 screws but i don't know the spacing or screw size, any help?. I am just in the planing stages and setting up fixtures and tools. but here is a drawing to kinda give you an idea of what it will be like.

jt I would be interested in a 24" radius to simulate a 4 foot diameter wheel depending on price. I would prefer it to go down to near zero on the ends though. instead of the .5 inches that you are showing in your drawing.

that would not be a problem, i have actuality been thinking about how thin i could make it as that will make material cheaper.

Definately be interested.

I like it! I think something in the 18" - 24" radius---3-4' diameter would be great. I'd buy one.

your current method of affixing the plate to the platen would be awesome for me, as my platen is a piece of 2" angle iron. Drill two holes and bolt on, easy as pie. What sort of pricetag are we talkin here?

I'm possibly interested (once I FINALLY can build a grinder) depending on the price.

Yeah, I also believe those that Todd made are sanding blocks as well, though you could probably modify them.

JT, I'd be interested depending on the cost.

nathan- ya that's what i think. but i don't know if there hardened, i would doubt it as that thy are very large and thats a lot of material for the price.

thy would be more then 50 each but i hope less then 100. it all depends on how much time and material it takes. I want to use good materal like maybe D2 as that will last a bit longer then A2. I will make me some and see how long it takes. but i really cant see them being more then 100 for sure but more like around 60-75.
