Railroad Tie Knife

So is the tie supposed to be a good wood for a handle? When I think of ties I picture the creosote soaked ones, which are nasty! What is the steel, do you know?
 
Railroad ties are the wooden support beams for the rails. I wonder if the blade was originally a railroad spike?
