Ralph Turnbull Spyderco collaboration (pics)

"With the kind permission of Spyderco, what you are seeing is a preview of a new magnetic knife that they are in the process of producing at their plant in Golden Colorado.

This is a slip joint folder and the blade is held open by a rare earth magnet. The blade is also held closed by the action of the same magnet!

The blade is just short of 3 inches in length and the knife measures nearly 7 inches long overall.

Pricing for the new knife has not yet been determined. But when the knife is released for sale, you will be able to order it on this website. "

Pics aren't showing up for me. I'm getting the little blue squares. I saw some pics on the Spyderco factory forum, it looks very nice.

here are the pics.

Another great example of Spyderco's willingness to innovate and compliance with a voiced customer need. Though I love my tough locking Spydies, I may get this cool little model anyways. Those scales have an interesting texture. Any info about what they're made out of?

Oh, and if the magnets are anything like the Neodymium ones I have, they will be very strong.

It kind of reminds me of the poor old “Martial” that never got made. I think the “USA Rare Earth” is pretty hilarious though. :)

If the price is right, I will give this folder a try. Even though I prefer locking knives, this "rare earth magnet" is too interesting for me to resist.

Just out of curiousity,

Has it been tested as to affect on memory sticks and such?
Thanks for asking. That is an excellent question that I had not thought of asking.

I doubt memeory sticks would be affected since they don't use magnetic media. (I think)

Plus the magnet is relatively small so while the effect on the blade is there, the field falls off rapidly with distance.

Memory sticks, no. They are solid state. Magnetic media like 5.25" and 3.5" floppy disks and hard disks, possibly. Depends on how strong it is. Harddisks are usually pretty well shielded but thats not to say data loss doesnt happen. I have a $6k DOD certified HD degausser at work that is made to wipe out hard disks that are being returned to the manufacturer that uses a very strong field to do it. Many many many times stronger than what you'd expect to find on this knife.

Sweet. I'll probably get one.
I remember that there was a big debate a while back when the Turnbull Rare Earth Magnet folder came on the scene, as to whether it technically qualifies as a "true slipjoint," but I don't care, really. :D

Ralph also makes this design in a few customs as well as the collaboration with Spyderco but only a few have been seen.

He will be offering a signed version of the collaboration I think.

FYI

Looks like peel-ply CF scales -- I wonder if production will be the same. Also, I really like the deep carry clip of the UKPK. I hope the production Rare Earth clip will be like the UKPK clip.

That is a beautiful knife! Looks a little like a cool slipjoint Chinook! And with the magnets?! A must have! Ah...finally a gents folder I like!:D
