(Mods, I hope this is in the right place. I've posted it here since it's all about outdoors and survival gear.)
I'm sure you are like me and you are always on the lookout for gear that's all about quality and attention to detail. I mean, we've all had, or at least started off with, gear that we more or less put up with but didn't really like. That is until we learned a little more and saved up for what not only works but we KNOW we will use. Sometimes it starts off with that backpack that wasn't too comfortable but it was on sale. Or that knife that seemed cool from a distance but after a few trips outdoors with it, well it's just not what we thought.
I hope I'm not too far off base here, but often with us knife enthusiasts, we may like the knife but wish we had a different sheath. Right? That little fact could mean the difference between leaving the knife in the drawer or always having it with you on an adventure. Here is where custom sheaths come in. There's all kinds of sheaths from all kinds of makers, with all ranges of quality. Some will fit most anything. Others go together like peanut butter and jelly. Let me tell you about Ram Sheaths:
A few years ago I purchased a rather universal, horizontal carry sheath. Let me tell you, I liked it! It became my sheath of choice and it was universal enough to sort of fit a few of my knives with few modifications. I liked it enough that I contacted the maker, Robert Marcinek, again for a second sheath. He was kind enough to make another very nice sheath. Often my other friends looked at these sheaths and asked where they came from. Here recently I purchased a Fiddleback Hunter from another member here at the BF. It came with a nice JRE sheath that fit it well, but I was left wanting more.
Out of the blue, I received an email from Robert letting me know that he had improved and redesigned his sheaths. What a coincidence! He informed me of the changes he had made, including better leather and an improved survival pak. After some back and forth emailing, I sent my knife his way and in just over a weeks time this is what I found at my door.
Wow! I almost don't know what to say about this sheath!! (Alright, I'll do my best) First of all this is not a "universal" type sheath. It is absolutely custom made for this Fiddleback Hunter.
To say it fits like a glove is an understatement. Gloves typically come in sizes small-xl. Hopefully one of those sizes will work. This sheath is expertly molded. When you insert the knife, it actually gives a reassuring 'click' when it falls into place. The leather is quite stiff, almost reminding me of kydex. To release, a little tug is required. This knife is not falling out, keeper strap or not!
I love the look of the dyed leather too. Its not just uniformly brown, but looks more distressed. Almost like it was cut from a cowboy's old and faithful saddle looking for it's next life. It's absolutely beautiful. The loops are held on by chicago type screws. These aren't just generic, mind you. One side looks more like a mosaic pin and the other has the business side. A standard screwdriver could take them off leaving you with two holes suited well for paracord should you want to lash the sheath to a pack or whatever your needs. Its fully welted and double stitched too.
On the back of the sheath, behind the keeper strap, and on the front of the survival pak is the Ram Sheath logo.
The survival pak is very nice for sure. It has a firesteel loop sized for an army sized rod.
And the pocket on it is a good size too. Mine will fit all kinds off stuff. Like what? (its starting to rain, sorry but we have to move this inside)
How about a BIC lighter? You got it!
I know, you are probably thinking, why a lighter and a firesteel? Ok, how about some fatwood and twine for a small fire kit? Easy!
Sharpening stone? No problem!
Hey, it even fits my Leatherman Super Tool!!!
Another cool feature is the survival pak is detachable. You could even wear the pak separately from the sheath if you wanted too.
All in all I have to say that this sheath is super cool. Robert is a gentleman and a very honest guy. I have to admit that I was a little apprehensive about sending my Hunter off, especially since I just got it. But now, I am convinced that if I didn't, I wouldn't be as happy as I am now. My wife was even really impressed and was looking over my shoulder when I opened the box!
If you are looking for a custom sheath, I'd suggest Ram Sheaths in a heartbeat - emailing is a good way to get in touch with him. Here is his address if anyone is interested: marcinek.a@sbcglobal.net
