I've long been a fan of handy little knives..pocket fixed blades, and folders for field use. On my past few trips however I have come also to appreciate the value of a larger blade...in the 6-8inch category..largely due my being able to purchase a bk7 from a very generous forum member ( incidentally I now have a rat 7 on the way which is being given to me as a gift by a newbie camper whom I recently took out for the first time)..Any way speaking form my limited experience with knives in this category I have found that they chop decently although not awesome, they are easy to baton and do heavy camp work with as well. Yet are still managable enough to use for more intricate tasks.
My last time out for an overnight I just brought my becker and a folder..and it was an awesome combo..I think I might stick with something like this for a bit..a slightly larger blade, and a vic rucksack..(and my new Breeden Necker cause it's the bees' knees) Any way I'm just collecting thoughts on the combo of a larger let blade in the6-8 inch range, accompanied by a folder or necker...I was given thought adding a pocket chainsaw to the mix and forgoing a my axe or machete....As the pocket chainsaw can easily cut would to length and a large knife can be used to split it if need be..both can easily be thrown into a pack and take up less room than a larger chopper..anyway it's worked for me the past few times..I'm going to play more and see how it goes..

Also check out this euro pean link it features some nice uses of a pocket chainsaw..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERA8iEpiyJY

It also shows him using an Opinel an often underused favorite, Although he makes a few cuts that looks like he'll be joining me in the stitch of the month club

I've really appreciated the addition of a small folding saw (Kershaw/Bahco or a Silky). They are much more efficient at getting through smaller branches and rounds. I like bigger knives, but you'll usually just find a 4-5" blade on my belt; the larger chopper is in the pack.

DANG...just noticed I'm over 1000 posts! Must have missed the momentous occasion:)

And no giveaway?!?!? A$$ hahaha:D:p

i have a 6" blade fixed blade at Paul Bos' place right now with some other blades...i plan on keeping this one. i'm curious to see how the longer blade handles without being a chopper style. mostly i'm curious to see if the longer blade that would be handy during cooking tasks and batoning wood will be a hindrance with the other typical bushcraft tasks that i do.

cool link on the pocket chainsaw, i agree it looks like he is awfully close to hurting himself.

right now i think i am very happy with my hatchet and my mora or stockman. i am very happy with the efficiency that this combo gets things done, very little if any compromise.

in a combo like that, i would rather have a hatchet and the small folder, as i am just more used to a hatchet.

great video too. i liked that it was in german, gave me a chance to brush up (even though my german is still pretty bad. that guy really knows how to get his $5 worth out of that OP, sehr prieswert fur eine messer( my butchered german)
