I know Rambo’s knife is a contintious subject, but please bear with me. . .
theoretically, if John Rambo were a real person at that time, what knife could that have been? I’m guessing either the Spanish Aitor jungle survival knife or more likely a Randall.
Essentially, what are some real world inspirations for that knife.
Thanks

In which Rambo movie? Each movie had a different knife.

It's my understanding that in the book "First Blood" by David Morrell, that the movie was based on, Rambo didn't even have a knife.

But I'll say Marine Kabar. He was a Vietnam vet after all.

It's been a long time, but I think in the novel First Blood that the movie was based on, he had a hunting knife that he got halfway through his adventure from one of the guys tracking him, the guy with the dogs, Orville.

A Buck would certainly be a good possibility.

I never read the book, but if that is the case, then I guess it could be just about anything. Western brand or Buck would be most common in the West, I think.

Buck, Gerber or a Randall are good candidates. Some folks have mentioned Buck and Randall.

I'm hoping a Gerber fan will chime in. I'm not all that familiar with the vintage models.

Maybe some kind of SOG knife ?

As I recall, the book didn't really talk much about the knife, the guy that Rambo got it from was a hunter so I believe it was referred to as a hunting knife or not at all. It was just something picked up along the way and used. It was the movie that made the knife a star.

This seems more true to life to me .

A special forces type is more defined by his personal skill set and determination, than gear / equipment .

Of course , marketing is better served by the myth of magical special products .

I agree with you, and this was stressed a number of times in the book. A small part of the reason why Rambo pushed back on the Sheriff the way he did was because he was starting to wonder a little bit if he was getting soft.

All the special tactical high-speed low drag gear is definitely hollywood. When Rambo began his adventure, he was buck naked.

Ka BAR without a doubt. Or maybe a Glock knife.

For the ridiculous (yet absurdly enjoyable) sequels, I’d pick the Becker BK9 if I were Stallone’s propmaster. A foam prop version of course. Because we don’t want any on-set fatalities.

As you mentioned, the first film was based on an actual novel written by Morell, the later books were novelizations based on the movies. I read somewhere (so I'm not entirely sure if it's true or not, but seems pretty par for the course for Hollywood) that they went to him to write the novelization for the other movies and he didn't want to do it.

Then they basically said if you don't do it, we'll just find someone else. So I guess he did it, lol. I don't blame him, I would have done it and cashed the check as well. But I agree, they all pale in comparison to the first one.
