Anyone familiar with this "Rambo IV Knife" (http://www.bladesknifeshop.com/rb4.htm) made by Master Cutlery? It looks like it would make a good field knife provided the 1060 blade is hard enough and holds an edge well. I'm not into the Rambo thing, but this chopper looks like a nice, compact, heavy-duty golok.

Looks like a thick golok to me. Should make a good chopper and price isnt terrible but would be an awfully heavy "field knife".

If you want to buy one of those, buy the United Cutlery version. Gil Hibben licensed his design to United Cutlery. Master Cutlery is just ripping him off like they do with most knifemakers. Both are 1060 carbon steel.

Altogether I wouldn't support a company that ripped off the Talon patent from Busse..

But yes, if you do decide to get it, buy from united cutlery..

Thanks for replies. It would be good to know the blade hardness and total weight, but I haven't been able to get that info anywhere. I read that 1060 is a good "sword steel", which is very tough but not particularly hard. Also, the available photos indicate a high grind, so maybe it doesn't weight as much as one might expect.

I came across the Rambo IV while searching for full-tang, golok-like blades. My preference would be for the Bark River Golok, but those seem to be long gone. Any hot tips would be appreciated. :D

I mean, the hadnle doesn't look very comfortable (I think it's just a wrap and some tape right???) for chopping,, and it would be heavy, but I guess it would make a decent knife.
:D

Bill Siegle's rendition looks functional -

The handle is leather wrapped.

Okay, it's done. I found an eBay offering with no bids and picked one up at a the lowest available price. When I saw the item there was about a minute left for bidding so I had to move fast or forget it. Shipping is Priority Mail, so it should be here soon.

I'll post a review after I've had a chance to use this thing. I figure if I don't like the handle but the blade is good I'll get it rehandled with canvas micarta. Should be plenty of folks around here who could "handle" that. :D

that pointy bit just forward of the handle looks nasty ...
that and the edges coulda easily been rounded more to make it user friendly

but besides that its a LOT like some of the choppers I belted out of leaf spring here

should be good

The whole point of the knife, thematically, is that Rambo himself forged it out of a chunk of scrap steel in the jungle. Complaining about the fit and finish is rather silly. It's *SUPPOSED* to be rough.

I, for one, think Gil Hibben did a great job of making a cool looking design that is believable as having been pounded out in the jungle with a charcoal forge by someone with no skills. That's quite the tall order if you think about it.

It's definitely got some "rough edges". I'll probably work it over with a file and a belt sander.

well when ya put it that way ... for someone in a jungle with no tools , he did a GREAT imitation of someone being a bit ham-fisted on a belt sander :)

I handled an original one made by Gil hibben. It is a huge and heavy knife.. Not something I'd want to carry around.

Eh, weight is personal preference. This is a big heavy knife for sure, but not compared to my 18" Ang Khola. I have no trouble carrying that around. But then, I'm a big boy.
