Upon further examination and doting over my sheath, I have to say i'm slightly
less than enthused. I'd like to start off by saying what helped me choose the sheath was the cool cross-retention snap strap that goes across the handle and helps secure the knife. The website advertises the sheath having this. After a few days and wanting to clarify something I come to learn that he
no longer provides the cross snap because after a time it pulls the leather off the Kydex (LOL WHAT?!?!). So after some research/thinking I had suggested instead of mounting the female end in the middle on top of the leather, to mount it to the side on one of the eyelets. If I had not given him this idea (which I offered to pay more for, by the way) I would not have received the retention strap as advertised. After my purchase was done, I notice his website is handily updated to show that he does not provide that snap any longer.
Now, to the nitty-gritty of the actual sheath. The back leather plate where it attaches to the belt is badly glued together and if you pull even slightly you see the glue strands start to come undone. There are ELEVEN splits on the eyelets on the back
(Something he ASSURES a critic on youtube he has moved on from, noticed, and remedied in the past).
Here is the video where the critic mentions split eyelets and he assuages that concern.
Here is the comment exchange between them about the eyelets.:

Didn't you say your eyelets does not split and crimps around perfectly? I actually like your sheaths but I just can't stand the fact that you say "high quality" when the eyelets are cracked. Best of luck!!

+Ray Contego I realize you're trying to catch me in a "gotcha!" moment. What I said was I was having that issue in the past. I've since corrected that issue. Let me go further. I started using an industrial brand eyelet that is higher in quality and don't split. They crimp perfectly. Any video or picture that you may have seen with any of my eyelets that in fact did show splitting where MY OWN sheaths. I never felt the need to replace them. However my customers never receive sheaths with splitting because if it did I would have replaced it as soon as I caught it. If ever I did send a sheath and it had a split, it was an error on my part. The customer can always return it to be corrected. I have never had a customer complain about the eyelets. I don't mind criticism, Ray. But you're trying to make me look like a liar. I'm not having any of that.
If that is not a lie, I do not know what is.
Gotcha!
The leather back plate is
not flush with the sides of the sheath. There is a knife-rattle and the knife jimmies back and forth slightly loose. Because he has Micarta and I, G10, my knife is almost impossible to pull out of the sheath one handed. What's more, is when I snap the knife into the sheath, and pull it out, it feels like
I might damage my knife. The leather used on the back-plate is immaculate, with no mars or blemishes, but when Freddy glued the leather to the Kydex he left bubbles, mars, and scratches. The sides where the Kydex meets/presses against each other have large gaps and do not conjoin together. I suppose it is worth mentioning there is no way for moisture to drain out. The quality difference between the leathers make it all feel very cheap. The four holes used to secure everything together did not line up, and so
Freddy took the liberty of just drilling a hole alongside each of the previous holes. Leaving
FOUR very gross cheap
double-holes, and making it much harder to assemble/disassemble the sheath. The "custom fire-steel" that I paid for was merely a fire-steel of proper diameter haphazardly shoved into a bullet casing full of glue. I made sure to clarify that I'd like extra screws for backup, later, and offered to pay 20$ for them. He assured me that wasn't necessary and only charged me 5$.
I did NOT RECEIVE MY SCREWS.
On my previous post I had mentioned that I got the address wrong and immediately clarified it with him within minutes, and felt like he took care of it. Shortly before he sent me the sheath I realized he
still had the address wrong, and I had asked him to change it again, he then told me "If I no longer live at this address to fix the pay-pal"
having apparently forgotten, and I had told him we already had this conversation, and it was my wife's previous work address. He then tells me rudely, "Oh, yes, I just scrolled up and saw" with no apology. I feel like this took maybe a half week or week to assemble, whereas I waited two months. I will be ordering any sheaths from
Dave Brown in the future to avoid any unfortunate incidents such as this. If this quality is worth 240-250$ to you, then by all means. But it is not to me and I am disappointed, now.
Communication started out great, and then went drastically downhill after I had paid and joined the "Ramos family". I was respectful enough not to call, and to just leave a text and wait, and I have half a mind to just post all the pictures of the conversation, as I feel like he was very brief, rude, and disrespectful. He alluded to none of this on our initial conversation, and I almost got the impression we could be friends.
I saved A VERY LONG TIME to afford this. Now I see why he has no presence on the forums, as his business would not last.
Suffice it to say let this thread be a
warning, to
NOT buy from
Ramos Customs.
