ram's horn question

I picked up about a half dozen sets of ram's horn scales at the Stamford show that I'm planning on using on a new knife design. The scales themselves are beautiful but, since I've never used this stuff I was curious if it has a tendancy to move around like buffalo horn? Also, it looks really dense. Is it possible to stabilize it, or necessary?

Must be stabilized in............Bong water:D

I'm on a kick.

From everything I've read, the horn will move around. Supposedly even stuff that is very old will still move a bit. I dont think stabilizing is possible due to density. It seems to work for Ed, maybe he will chime in.

How about sealing the horn with hairblower/Acuglas trick to seal it and prevent moisture asorbement/movement? I have a supply of buffalo horn I havn't used yet, but when I do, I'm going to try it. I assume slabs would be much more prone to movement.

I talked with Ed at the OKCA show about the ram horn and this is what he told me. First it needs to age for about 10 years and he does not do anything to it like stabalizing it. Bruce Evans had told me that moths will naw on it, Ed said only in Georgia. I think if you try anything on it its just going to be surface. The most important thing is how long it has aged and something I have found out is you don't want to get it hot. If you use a belt grinder on it make sure you use new sharp belts. Wear a mask!
