Aaron880 is correct that an interview with a Finnish soldier who had determined a fighting knife should have a blade of at least 6-inches to penetrate thru a Soviet soldiers thick Winter clothing, but he is incorrect about a traditional puukko being that long. Traditional puukkos were about the width of your hand or more like 4-inches. Then you have puukkos like the one Ilmari Honkanen's father made for him which was 7-inches long. When asked why the blade was so long Honkanen who spent 235 days operationing behind Soviet lines, replied 'It was not toothpicks we were making there". I have a Model 14, I was carrying a Ben Hibben Jungle Fighter (Hibben had a man named Benedict working with him for a short time 1964-65) but wanted more of a knife. I never really liked the finger grip handle and had the late Custom Knife maker Wayne Goddard, change the handle for me in 1988. I got the Model 14 in 1970, carried it on my last tour in Vietnam and for another 20 years on active duty. I also like the Model 1, and agree with most of the statements above about the differences between the two models. I would NOT make my decision on which is a better fighter, but rather what you are going to use it for. John
