Randall Model 23 - Stag handle disappointment

I received my Randall model 23 after a 5 year wait and I'm not sure what to think about the handle. I love the stag but it has a large ridge in the middle which doesn't look right. I've never seen another Randall with this ridge or hump on the handle. It does feel nice in the hand though.

Interesting, looks like it could get uncomfortable with that hump.. if it bothers you now than it will probably bother you later. I say try and see if Randall will do something about it.

You tend to take chances with natural materials like this, especially with Stag. Can you send it back and have them do something with it?

It's actually comfortable since the hump fits in the center heal portion of my hand. I just don't like the way it looks.

Well, if you plan on keeping it as a user, I say test it out with some use and see if after some whittling or carving or feather sticking or deer processing see how it feels and whether its comfortable.

If you plan on keeping as a safe queen and looking at it, the hump could bug you. I don't know... if it were me I wouldn't like the hump but its a personal thing.

Don't wait a year and then try to have Randall remedy the issue lol

I know what I would do, I would grind the hump off and then polish. It doesn't look like very much stag would have to be removed. But that's what I would do.

Agreed, wait 5 more years or grind it off.. easy choice for me lol but I don't own any safe queens.

Great #23 pattern though I don't know why they wouldn't have ground the hump off...maybe whomever was doing the work preferred to see more of the bark....give em a call and I'm sure they can help remedy this.

Dude, I would say to Randall "WTF", as you waited a long time and that hump is bullshit on a handle, especially where it is located. I have ordered from Randall a few times, they never let me down. The bump will send prospective customers running, so I hope you were not thinking of that knife as an investment, resale might be tricky. What were they thinking when they shipped that knife out?

One of the reasons I will never order stag on a knife without actually seeing it & holding it in hand. Too many variations to it that can be either uncomfortable or unsightly.

I've actually had it a little over a year. I didn't hunt much last year so it didn't see any use. I pulled it out of the safe because I plan to use it and I forgot how much the hump bugged me. I will call Randall next week to see what they say. I should have done something about it sooner. It's not so much the hump but the wart on the stag. If they could file or smooth it in without tearing up the bark it would be fine. I don't think it's anything that they would have to replace the handle over and I certainly do not want to wait another 5 years for a new knife.

Kindasharp,

I thought the same when I first saw it but it didn't feel too bad in the hand. I should have taken care of it sooner but hopefully Randall will make it right somehow.

Let us know what happens.

I cant image why they would leave it.. My experience with Randalls customer service is PLAN EXCELLANT! those shop guys are awesome in my opinion and i am sure they hold Randall buyers who still place randall orders directly as PRIME customers.. They took good care of me a few years ago... Though i cannot image why they would leave that hump.. i am sure it was some old school maker who felt "Hey this feels good" personally i would get it removed unless i purchased it 3rd party.. then i would just enjoy it

After spending that kind of money, I'd be pissed off. After spending that kind of money and waiting five years, I'd be really pissed off. Can't believe they actually sent that to a customer.

Stag is a natural material. Not two knives with stag handles are the same. That is part of the charm. Randall knows that and (most) customers acknowledges this.
If you cant live with that, dont buy stag. Go for generic G10, micarta or the like.
I say, its a nice knife, congrats. Leave it as is, especially as you say it feels good in the hand. Of course as often is the case, one/you might now focus so much on a perceived defect, that you cant enjoy the knife. I guess most of us knows that feeling for some reason or other.
In that case, sell the knife and check out a future stag knife handle prior to buying to avoid another disappointment.
