Randall question

It looks fine to me, from the general look of the knife, I'd guess late 50's -early 60's. The brass back starts in 1954 and end by the early 80's. The size is different, but Randall was more receptive to custom work back then too.

Here's a good thread that shows how much variation the older Bowies can have in terms of fittings, etc.... - https://www.knifenetwork.com/forum/showthread.php?t=63508 .

Edit - Do you have the sheath for it?

From the pic in #9 it looks as if the guard is soldered - which Randall invariably does, but few of the fakers do. Just another point.

Looking forward to hear what RMK says.

Thanks all for your patience . Sent pics to Jason Randall and had several phone conversations with him .
The knife is a Smithsonian Bowie with brass spine , brass collar ,scalloped brass butt and ivory handle .
The features that make it unique is the recessed tang screw and the 14" blade . It is one of less than a handful that the blade exceeds 12" .
The knife was made in 65 or 66 .
Thanks to Arathol for the advice .
Now i just need to find out its value . I am not a knife guy , but this was just too cool to walk away from
Thanks , Steve

It's worth a lot. Can't give values here so do more research online for Smithsonian models. Check on Arizona custom knives there are a few sold there. Don't be in a hurry to sell it.

Well, since value discussion is verboten, lets just say that there are some high end Randall collectors who would sell their first born for a piece like that. Its probably one of the largest Randalls ever made, and it might be one of one or one of two ever made.....so you'll need to find the right people and ask lots of questions before doing anything with it. If Randall has any records, see if you can get copies for provenance, and maybe if you're lucky they can tell you who this was made for all those years ago.
If somebody contacts you out of the blue offering a large sum of money, assume its worth at least 2 or 3 times that, maybe more even......The vultures will soon be circling this one if they aren't already....

Jason said he does not know of a larger Smithsonian they made . There is two 13" Smithsonian's but nothing he knew of that was larger .
I think I will bring it to the Badger knife show in March if I still have it .
Where do I find these Randall collectors ?
Again , thanks for your advice .

There are Randall discussion forums, one of which is a subforum here....You might want to pony up the few bucks for a gold membership. Its would be worth it just for this knife.....

T tunefink is a member here and an authority on old Randall’s. He doesn’t come around often. But by mentioning him in this post he should get an alert when he logs on.
