Randall,Rolex,Hi-Power

Dirk, I can't remember which group it was. In fact, I can't remember if it was even specified which 'branch' of the 'special forces.' I have been using the term special forces in a more generic way, to mean anything from Combat SAR <?> to the SEALs. IIRC, the armorer was referring to SEALs. I do know that I mis-typed when/if I wrote SF carried cocked and unlocked; I meant SEAL team there. Sorry about that.

My three for today would be:

1. Colt 45 (gold cup)
2. Randall Mod 14
3. Timex Watch (The Rolex is in a vault - and the vault is much too heavy
smile.gif
) + spare timex watch in backpack.

I was peacetime, garrison, but we still had fun buying and comparing toys in the squad bay; Colt .45s were popular but there were a few Hi-Powers, I had a Buck but Gerber survival knives seemed more common, and watches weren't a big deal as people seemed to break them all the time, I know I did. I gave up and bought a $20 Timex that I wore for almost 20 years until the base corroded and started bothering my wrist. My son has it now and I have a Pulsar stainless that I like well enough. Although I generally prefer .357 revolvers I'd probably carry a Hi-Power, SRK or something similar, and a quartz watch like a Pulsar but also carry a backup as batteries do die.

1. Rolex Stainless Submariner
2. M1911A1 (built by Ken Cook!)
smile.gif

3. Lile SlyII (anybody wanna trade?)

I've had the Rolex since 83, no complaints and you would never believe what it's gone through! (Really, you'd never believe it!)
Built the .45 in 88 and there are NO problems with it, and bought the Lile in 90.
Since I live near the Lile shop, I take it and get it resharpened every so often but it SUCKS for holding and edge.
So, for when I need something hair popping sharp, I reach for the AFCK. When I need something BIG and pretty sharp, I settle for the Lile. (I REALLY miss my Randal #14)
The Randal was "lost" in Central America a very long time ago.

Outlaw-Dogboy - No biggie, I was just curious. Spec-Ops always brings out interesting points to discuss. This particular one is always interesting.

I would feel well equipped today with Browning HP 9mm or .40 s&w, Rolex Mariner and Randall Model 14.

I believe these 'tools' have stood the test of time. Now if I could only find NIB Pachmeyer Mags.

The last time I went into "battle" (the Steel Challenge, 2 weeks ago), my tools were:

1) SPEEDTECH Synergy w/ Nandina handle & Elishewitz ground odins eye damascus blade

2) SEIKO Titanium w/ solar dial

3) BRILEY "Plate Master" 1911 in 38 Super w/ titanium compensator, skeletonized slide, linkless barrel, 1 lb. trigger, red dot sights, etc.

The right tools for this job. The only thing missing was magnetic bullets.

Stay sharp!

this isn't a stopping power debate.)

Outlaw_Dogboy,

Before Waco, Delta used to come to New Orleans on occasion for urban training, and we greased the ways for them. I was priviledged to be part of a group that went to the Range 19 complex at Bragg for a week of training with them. I was a Ranger long, long ago, so I got along great with these guys and still have some contacts there.

To clarify your remark, they (and, they tell me, the Green Beanies and SEALs, who are the only other folks with access to these POS, feel the same way) have absolutely no use for the HK Mk23 crew-served handgun. Delta operators still use their 1911s for GP work, but you ought to see the raft of specialized handguns they have for those "special occasions"!

Last I heard, most SEAL teams are still toting the P226. The Gold element of SEAL Team 6 was here last year; I didn't get to play, but my pal told me they were carrying the SIG.

Dunno what the Green Beanies are using these days; my contacts at Smokebomb Hill and JFK Center all retired quite some time ago.

During my all-expense-paid trip in '70-'71, it was an issue 1911, a KaBar I traded for (cost me a poncho liner; jarheads are easy to please!) and that green plastic issue Timex after the band on my Seiko broke while un-assing a Huey. I didn't have time to fish around in the paddy for the watch. Bummer.

Today, it's a Glock 19 (personally-owned; soon to be issued a Glock 35, they tell me), an older Spyderco Endura (soon to be a StarMate, if my dealer can ever find one), and the Luminox "Navy SEAL" watch (it isn't really, but the duffers don't know that. Best watch I've ever owned, including a SS Rolex Submariner).

Steve

When I was in Nam you never saw a Rolex unless it was on the wrist of an Air
American pilot or a highly paid civilian working for RMK or PA&E. The watch of choice was the GI issue Hamilton with OD web strap or the Seiko automatic (no quartz available then) which could be bought in the PX for $15 - $30. I was in Army in II Corps, Central Highlands, so can't speak for what the Marines wore who were of course mostly up north in I Corps .

Better watches than Rolex are now available for less $$$ from Tutima, Sinn, etc... And then there's quartz - a G-shock is extremely tough. Thanks for serving.

I'm not in the military, but these would be my choices:

Casio G-Shock with the 7 year battery(I don't think they make this model anymore.)

Randall #14 in Carbon Steel

S&W Model 66 with a 4" barrel(I don't own any guns yet, but this would be my choice for a war situation.)

Well I'm game, so here are my choices:

1. A Seiko SM43-0830. This is an all titanium kenetic day-date styled much like the Rolex. It replaced a Seiko manual chronograph I had for decades... so many that Sieko finally no longer stocked parts for it
frown.gif
. I favor the older Omega too; the last 10 years or so Omega has been under different management and those who collect watches say that the quality isn't near the same as the older pieces.

2. I too am partial to the Hi-Power although I have quite a few other handguns of different caliber and manufacture. I have 2 P-35s, both highly customized, one a short slide. Here's a link to some pix of them:
http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=53680&a=376197

3. Ah the blade. Here things get dicey as the choices are many for rough field duty. I'd opt for my Simonich Talonite Wambli but would also pack a larger knife in the form of my Mission 10" MPKS-A2 or my Himalyan Imports 15" Ang Khola khukri.

Serving with the Marines (the guys with the big watches and the small thingamajigs..)I currently wear:
1. Rolex Submariner
2. 1911A1 built at Quantico, and an M-4.
3. CRK Project II

The Rolex (and I am not the only guy that has one)because it is accurate and doesn't need batteries, something learned from experiance after the batteries on 2 Seikos and a G-shock failed when I couldnt get more. Still a lot of the guys wear the G-shock. The 1911A1 and M-4 because that is what we are issued and they are great firearms. Contrary to popular belief personal sidearms are rarely carried and after the front sights fell off our crew served handguns (Mod O Mark 23) nobody wants to carry it. As for fixed blades, Randalls still are top of the heap but I get a lot of covetous looks from guys eyeing the CRK. And everyone carries a multitool and a clip mounted folder usually a spyderco or bm.

Speaking of G-Shocks....believe the factory when they say you must return them to have batteries replaced.

My old G-Shock's batteries finally died after 4 years - 6 beers, 5 hours, 32 springs, 25 o-rings, several newly invented curse words, and half a dozen screws later, I decided to go to Wal-Mart and buy a new one.

Damn good watches and will take sincere abuse, but changing the batteries is factory work. - Jeff
