Hi - sorry if this belongs in a better place:

if you had a to choose between a Randall 11 and a Randall Sergeant's (non-catalog item) for an all-around knife, which would you choose and why?

i know randall may make a model better than either of those 2 for the purpose...that is not the question (have both available locally, used )

by all around i mean outdoors (no skinning) (camping/hiking), opening things, cutting things (rope, ties (non-metal), etc

much appreciated!

This is close, but I'd go with the Sargent's Special. The point style is a bit better for general work. And the flat spine toward the guard is better in my opinion if you need to apply heavy thumb pressure during a cut.

I would choose the Sergeant's model personally. I already essentially have the knife with the Blackjack 125 or the 124. Not precisely sure of the blade dimensions, so I list both.

a Randall #11 (Alaskan Skinner) is in no way, an 'all around knife'. It was designed to process dead animals. Does a great job with that, but you would never carve wood, chop branches or anything of the sort, with it. That sort of stuff would destroy the delicate edge.

As Mannlicher said, the No. 11 is not designed as a general purpose knife. The Sergeants model is a more general purpose design for the woods. I mentioned the Blackjack 125 above; it is one of my favorite general purpose woods knives.

Its cool you found both. I'm jealous,(especially about the sergeant's). I hope the prices aren't too crazy.

As per "all rounder" Randall, my choice would not include any of considered by you, but if I had to choose from two models by your desire - than "The Sergeants" model without hesitation. It's more sturdy better shaped for wide array of tasks clearly from picture.

I believe that is what he purchased...3 weeks ago.

Thanks

What would your preferred Randall be for an all around we?

If you ask me, (not sure) than I d consider between catalog model 5 "camp and trail" all rounder vs model 14 "Attack" full tang. 14 would be my option for all round tasks.

I consider the #5-6 (single hilt) probably the best starter Randall. Bo Randall's favorite was the #3-6.

That being said, the Sargeant model is a very fine knife, I'm glad they decided to keep it around after Stoddard's decided to thin out their outdoor knife selection. Originally, the Sargeant's was a Stoddard's exclusive, which is why you may not see it as often.

Another I wish they'd bring back is the Shaw / Leibowitz Special, with is sort of a large, flat ground Sargeant's model.
