Random, but need some advice! Can a CGFBM be passed off as machete to Federales??

Hey Hookah... have you ever visited Costa Rica?

The lifestyle is very laid-back, and it is a much safer place than Mexico. It's a beautiful country and the folks are very friendly.

Just a thought, man.

.

Unfortunately this is how it goes down there. Legal is a relative term outside of the U.S. Do us both a favor and just send me your CGFBM. I'll take good care of her for you.

Not to get political, but i would argue that, these days, legal is a relative term INSIDE of the U.S. as well.

Big knife? In NYC you can't even buy a Big Gulp anymore.

sorry.

Don't take it, if they find it, and they like it, you will lose it.

Moral of the story? If you really don't want that CGFBM any more, just send it to me.

either that or bring a wad of cash to pay off them off.... damn tough one bud, if you have a safe place to keep them up here I would do that and actually buy yourself a machete down there to have fun with. Good luck on your journey, let's have that beer when you get back

Too pretty.

The question is not if you can pass you knife off as a machete, it is if the guys you run into want your knife. If it looks pretty or cool it is gone. Hint: they will like your CGFBM.

Stock up on cheaper alternatives and machetes if you want to carry something on you or in your car.

I've never been to Mexico but I've spent a few years in a developing country with many corrupt police/officials. It doesn't so much matter what the law is, as to who you run into. If someone wants to bust you, they are going to bust you. You may eventually get out of it, you may not. Either way it probably won't be pleasant.

If you will be settling in one location, my advice would be to get connected. Typically influential members of the community are not harassed, befriending them can help. If you plan to carry a knife that you think the police would have a problem with my advice would be go straight to whoever is in charge of the local police and talk with them. They may be honest and willing to help you out with run-ins with their underlings, or they may be corrupt and want a bribe to help you....but I'd rather bribe the top guy once, than possibly several underlings.

Overall my advice would be to leave the knife at home, when you stick out from the locals it can be like walking around with a target on you.

It's not like you're going to be edc'ing a FBM, right? It will be fine on your property. I've spent a good amount of time in Mexico (hitchhiked and bussed from the absolute south to Tijuana) and have been to Central Mexico twice this year and it was far from a "hellhole." Mexico is a beautiful country with friendly people and a rich culture. It is not nearly as affluent as the US, sure, but neither is most of the world. Carry your FBM around the streets of Dallas and see how much it will cost to "bribe" your knife back.

I don't think Mexico, in general, is a hell hole, either.

But there are places, near the AZ border, where it's one of the most dangerous places on the planet, including several popular middle-east destinations.

And in my county, those places extend into the US, and all our government does is mark them as dangerous places WE CITIZENS shouldn't go due to drug trafficking.

No, i'm not kidding.

So basically, you can't generalize Mexico either way... "hellhole" or "... a beautiful country with ... a rich culture."

it depends on where you go, who you run into... pretty much like L.A., Chicago, or New York City. Any one of which, you would probably also lose your Mistress if caught with it on the street.

Good advice. I was once in a similar ''hellhole'' and in the custody of the local rozzers (cops for you americans :p) I'd been scooped in for a small incident involving the destruction of two and half jetskis and a bit of a friend's head.... Anyway, after some hours of discussion (conducted in a language I didn't know) the most senior cop arrived looking rather pleased with himself at having bagged this westerner. He immediately informed me that there would have to be a court hearing and that it could get rather unpleasant.

To cut a long story short, I happened to know the guy who had helped set up the marine police round those parts and got him on the phone with the police officer -- How his face fell!!

ps. hell holes are my favourite places

Let me put it this way, I'm an american. So american, that i couldn't even pass as british or canadian. That means that the number of places in the world that i can go, and be assured of my safety is limited.

Mexico is NOT on that list in my mind.

I'm sure i could manage it without a problem, but I see absolutely nothing about the place that makes me want to go near it.

Police corruption is bad enough here in the US where the cops have to be cautious when they decide to break the law. In places like mexico, the law is whatever the guy with the gun says it is. I don't want anything to do with it.

I grew up in Brooklyn and you are absolutely right. Growing up I had to buy my 4th of July fireworks out of some guys trunk or wosre, I had to deal with the Flying Dragons in chinatown. I didnt even go through puberty yet and I was dealing with 1000 year old tri-ad gangs just to celebrate one of the most American holidays there is. Down here in Floirda, walmart has everything I could want and then some. Sad but true.

I recently went to Cozumel and Costa Maya and these are resort towns and let me tell you a little something about how they treat tourists. I am all American but am of Spanish decent. Some of our family members still speak Spanish and I am one of the few. While in Mexico, I observed very disrespectful behavior. The Mexicans were not only trying to get as much cash off the toursist both American and abroad but treated them like they were a bunch of clowns. I understood evrything the Mexicans said and pretended not to speak the language so they would feel free to continue and continue they did. What irked me the most was the toursist are the lifeblood of these towns and should be treated with respect for their contribution to their local economy. There were a few exceptions and I was treated very well to evryone I spoke Spanish to. Just something to think about when visiting a foreign country. Also, I will never visit there again. If I want Mexican food, I'll go to Tacobell. Done.

When i worked for a landscaping company my right hand man was from mexico and he is a good friend of mine. He told me to never go to mexico, because "they will take your money, your truck, and your wife and you will cry"

I wont forget what he told me and im not going to mexico.

As far as taking a mistress to mexico, i agree with other guys that say leave it here safe in the states and get a cheap machete

Even if you did have the good fortune to be able to pass as a Brit, I doubt it would do you a great deal of good. Brits aren't exactly loved abroad -- we've been going round interfering with other peoples' business even longer than you guys!

I'm surprised of the image that you have of Mexico, maybe I'm a well connected guy as you said, but for me Guadalajara which is the second largest city in Mexico, and the place I live is still a beautiful one, and as all major cities have some no so good places, but for sure is not a Hellhole, and also I´m not dying to go to live in the states even when I´m able since I have an investors visa, so I believe that here is people talking with out knowing what is the real true, or just dramatizing what they hear in the news

There are god and bad places in Mexico, but as every other country in the world, there bad places as well in the us, but whay is killing this country sre the drug trafficking, is true that the drug cartels are very bad, and that they are more concentrated by the border, but why?, because the consumption is inside the US, so that is a mayor issue that nobody seams to talk about it, no consumption no trafficking period

Also as you know there is a very strict regulations for selling arms in Mexico, how come they are so many in the cartels hands?, ask about the failed "fast and furious" operation

So the reality here is that you have more chances to be robed or killed by a drug cartel then the Mexican Police

If I can help you some way I´m at your service

Wow! Thanks for all the responses and insights guys  After reading your responses, handling my mistress, and thinking on it, I've decided I'm going to leave the INFI at home. All is not lost though - I have a Pork Shank and MBC I have to pay Busse for and I'll have the shop ship them straight to my new place in Mexico. I also have a 1311 on order and hopefully the yard will be able to ship it down there to me as well. In the meanwhile I'm looking into a Fiddleback machete or a nice Bolo machete to use until the 1311 arrives (open to any suggestions that you may have)...

1- for those of you who graciously offered to take my CGFBM off my hands, I thank you for your kindness but am going to have to decline ;) I'm going to hide my Busses at my family's house and figure as long as my little bro can't get his hands on them, they'll be safe and ready for my return in a year and a half or so...

2- for those of you who suggested just don't move to Mexico, I appreciate the concern, but that's not an option for me. I have a very clear mission that I have to accomplish down there, and upon completion not only will I be in the best state I've ever been in (mind body and spirit), but more importantly, I will have also learned some new skills that I will be able to integrate into my future acupuncture practice and actually contribute towards helping other sick people (specifically addicts, ptsd victims, and those with other serious mental health issues). The training I will be participating in can only be learned down there as the medicine I'll be working with is currently illegal in the US  - beyond that, I've never had such a clear calling in life, so I'd be a fool to ignore it, even if I'll be dealing with a potentially dangerous 1000 mile drive once I cross the border at Nogales. Beyond that, I refuse to let fear and the sensational, media propaganda machine scare me out of doing what I am meant to be doing...

Having spent some time in Lebanon, I feel comfortable with the practice of bribing law enforcement officials, and figure my biggest concern is drawing attention from the cartels as I think they are what make Mexico, especially around the border, as dangerous as it is right now. I've been letting my car get dirty and am getting myself as tanned as possible before the drive. I figure if I stay on the toll roads and avoid driving at night, I'll get to my new town safely and quickly. My biggest realistic concern is getting pulled over by the Federales, but I won't have anything illegal so figure I'll pay the $50 pull-over fee and hopefully be on my way as quickly as possible.

Thanks again for all your advice guys! As of now it looks like I'll be starting my drive down Tuesday or Wednesday - just waiting to take my 4runner to the shop Monday morning for a quick fix and then I'll be good to go!

Vitadura - I especially appreciate your perspective since you are currently living there right now. You don't happen to know what knife carry laws are like in the state of Nayarit, do you?

Why dont you move to Norway instead of Mexico; here there is no such thing as blade lenght restrictions:D

That is something I can get behind....just have to talk my teacher into moving shop there and then I'll be good to go ;)
