Random encounters with fellow knife nuts

The knife rules are vague in NYC, it's why I switched out my UKPK which I love to a small slipjoint! I just don't want the hassle being how they are allowed to search your packs before entering the subway. Sometimes I stow my knives in my pack.

I still don't understand why not a small fixed blade. That's black and white. And the most secure lock design of all- none.

One of my clients was owned by a pair of friends. One, a former marine, didn't like or carry a knife (weird, right?). The other started carrying an S&W because he noticed that I used one often (score! new knife-user!). Anyway, the friends have a falling out and they each sold their half of the business to the same guy.

New business owner is a knife guy -- EDCs a Spyderco, and has a handful of older Spidercos.

Turns out he's an egotistical tool, and an awful client. He talked a buncha smack that you just. don't. say to your vendors. I retired the client last week.

So, not all knife people are nice.

I am planning to give a nicer knife to the former partner for his B'day this year. Maybe something from Kershaw. But I was surprised how well the S&W is holding up.

Some s&w are really decent.. Used to have a limited edition with a laser cut out... really miss that one

According to a recent Village Voice article, the NYPD look for pocket clips, and you're more likely going to be arrested than have your knife confiscated; if your carrying anything other than a SAK. And depending on your record, you can even be charged with a felony and do serious time. Just not worth it.

Yea the general practice is essentially that if it folds and locks, you're getting arrested. You MAY get off with just a summons if you're really lucky (and white) but most seem to get booked, which in Manhattan means being in custody for 12+ hours easily even if you post bail. If you can't post bail, then it's off to Rikers...where having a knife would be helpful and showering while seated is a valuable skill.

I thought to share this with you guys...

Now and then I drive cab, making some extra money (for buying knives, of course!).

Well, yesterday I was on a coffee break with one female colleague, and when we left back to work and walked to our cars she went to open a tailgate and said something about knife and something that she need to cut this or that.
After moment of hesitation, (after all I don't know her well, and did not knew how'd she would react if she knew I carry a knife),
I pulled my Delica from pocket, opened it and offered it for her.

I guess I kind of waited her reaction to be "Oh my god, what you are doing with that weapon?"
Or some similar comment, for her being on her 40's and mother of two kids, and we all know how mothers can be...right?

Well, she looked up, smiled and fished a yellow Mini-Griptilian out of her pocket saying
"Thanks for being such a gent, but I got my own blade".

For a moment I stood there speechless, I did not expect -that-, and then after a moment of silence
we both started to talk "What you carry, what knives you own" and so on...

Heh, seems that you never know when and where you meet a knife-person.

That's like a unicorn sighting for real lol.

I live in WNC and it's not uncommon to see pocket clips everywhere you go. But a few weeks ago at church I noticed my Sunday School teacher had a PM2 sticking out of his shirt pocket. I Showed him my BM 530 and since we bring something different to show each other each week. Just this past Sunday evening he sent pics of 2 fixed blades he had made Turns out he has just started making knives.

I usef to be in a group that went camping on a regular basis. I saw a lot if cheaper folders and some buck fixed blades. Never anything more than $40. Most people I've met would rather buy a dozen crap s&w or frost than 1 decent knife. However realistically they generally perform their job. S&w aren't that bad. I used to have a tac force that I actually really liked.
