Random Thought Thread

She's a world class Olympic athlete who is tested all the time, and comes from a country that is deservedly under great suspicion due to past shenanigans. So she accidentally takes her grandfather's heart pill.

Sounds reasonable!
If they are honest, they would just say if she doesn’t compete then it’s quite likely she will either end up in a work camp or have a convenient accident

Well, I hate to interrupt an oral thread but my daughter was born on Sunday. I’d planned to get a pic of her sleeping next to an HDFK (in the sheath, because I’m not a monster) but we had an emergency c-section (wife and baby are fine) so we’re still in the hospital. But hey, one more CPKer!
Congrats man!!
Glad to hear all are happy and healthy.
I'll get into the desk bourbon in your honor, Cheers!

[The] 15 yr old [Russian] quad-queen Kamila Valieva was found to have been taking a banned drug in (of all places) Russia just prior to the start of the Olympics.

A decision on the matter is pending tomorrow (Mon).

If the "fix" is in, she'll be aquitted, the Russians can keep the Gold for Team Figure Skating and she can continue to compete in the Women's Figure Skating competition (on Tues) which she is expected to win.

The supposedly "independent" arbitration board decided to let Valieva compete in the Women's Figure Skating competition despite the positive drug test, which started w/the short program yesterday. Valieva scored the most points (of course) but cried because she missed a jump. Boo hoo!!! :(

The NBC "color" announcers Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski (both past Olympic competitors) were NOT having any of it.

They both feel strongly (as others do) that Valieva should have been disqualified from competing in these Olympics. While they both were previously effusive in their praise of Valieva's skating ability, they had nothing to say about her Short Program performance except that it occured.

The really stupid part about the arbitration board's decision is that, if Valieva wins a medal (which is virtually guaranteed), there will NOT be a medals ceremony (as there will not be for the Team Figure Skating competition that Russia won w/Valieva's help), which means that the competitors from any other country (including the US, which won the Silver in the Team competition) who win a medal will not be able to take the stand to receive their medals.

That' really s*cks for the other competitors who win a medal because that ceremony in considered one of the highlights for the competitors in the Olympics.

As a result of this, there is talk of suspending Russia (which is already competing under the "flag" of Russian Olympic Committee and not the country itself because of previously having been found to have engaged in a doping scheme during Olympics in Sochi 2010) entirely from the Olympics for a certain period of time.

Let's hope that it's more than just talk!

Even WADA are fuming.
It’s a farce….and it’s political, not sporting reasons

He put viagra in his heart pill container. So, if she has to perform over four hours...

I can totally see Russian Olympic coaches literally putting it in her food without her knowing, though, and assess something like that as equally likely to her being in on it in the first place.

The pressure she’s under you can’t rule out her doing it herself…. Which the evidence points to with her blaming her gramps
Yeah like I said, I mean, to me it's a coin toss. But we know their entire Olympic program is rife with cheating and only the corruption endemic in the IOC is even letting the Russians compete at all.

If the Russians had any class, they would have volunatarily witdrawn Valieva from the Women's Competition, which would not have affected their Team win but they apparently hope to sweep the Women's Competition 1-2-3.

The American women are ranked too low after the Short Program to make a difference (8th, 11th & 13th) but the Japanese women are in a position to spoil it with Sakamoto in 3nd and Higuchi in 5th and the Russians in 1st, 2nd and 4th.

Here's hoping that they're able to take 2nd and 3rd after the Free Skate, leaving Valieva alone w/her spoiled reputation at the top.

Fingers crossed!

So American sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson was banned from the Olympics just last summer for smoking a joint.

But this Russian tests positive for a banned performance-enhancing combination of three drugs, and she gets to compete and take home two gold medals.

Just to be clear, I don't do weed - so no dog in that fight - but clearly something is very screwed up here.
