They spent money developing a zero-gravity pen because the graphite used in pencils is highly conductive. Minute graphite shavings floating around a rocket get sucked into vents and work their way into circuits causing them to short out, at best. At worst they start a fire and suddenly the multi-billion dollar rocket/module/shuttle is destroyed along with everyone in it. The Soviets learned this the hard way and quickly started using the space pen as well. The benefits provided by NASA far outweigh the cost. However there is a famous story about NASA spending a million $ (back when that was a large amount of money) to develop a pen that would work in a vacuum. The much more pragmatic Russians used pencils until they could steal the design.

My career keeps coming in useful also, as my wife has recently become involved in 'math distribution', aka tutoring. She expects me to solve all the tough questions...Well, at least my former career came in useful today, getting my wife tossed as a potential juror on a meth possession and distribution case.
She was told she didn't have to report back for the duration of her jury service.
