Random Thought Thread

I don't think you're supposed to "get" it. By the time you hear about it, they'll just move on to the next thing to be offended about.

I used to be "with it." But then they changed what "it" was. Now what I'm with isn't "it," and "it" seems weird and scary...

I'm only 30 and am already no longer "with it." I'm a dad now, so I guess that just comes with the territory.

My family calls me Jo. Anybody that calls me Jonni, I know they don't really know me. It's funny, my dad named me that but he absolutely hated people calling me Jonni but Jo was perfectly fine. When I was younger it was just close family and friends that called me Jo. In school I used Jonni Jo. At some point just Jo became easier
Between "Let's do it for Jonni", and "HERE'S JONNI", lots of meme possibilities...(I'm not going to make 'em!).

I use they/them all the time in my work. It's practical since many of my clients have names that I cannot ascertain gender from - I don't have time to research whether or not a Pakistani or Japanese name is male or female.

They/them it is - it's practical, respectful, with low risk of me offending anyone.

Who knew there was an auto museum located in Martinez, CA? 🤷‍♂️

Until recently, I didn't (even though I visit Martinez frequently) but there is an auto museum there that is devoted to the Shelby Cobra & Mustang -- that's called "The Cobra Experience" -- that I visited for the 1st time yesterday.

Lots of very rare and beautiful Cobras/Mustangs in an out of the way and relatively small location, including 2 of the cars used in the film "Ford vs. Ferrari."

The museum also included a display of a lot of gear/equipment that was actually used in Shelby's shop in LA -- a picture of which was hung on a wall.

The museum is only open to the public once a month but, if you're planning to be in the area and want to visit the museum, you can find its current calendar and other info about it HERE.

"Grandfathered" was brought up as offensive. The problem? No one could think of a replacement term. So we will continue to use it.
Nobody could think of exempt, pre-approved, or preauthorized?

I swear business is spending more time worrying about what words to use than to actually conduct business. Then again, offending one client could mean the end of one's business.

I work in Corporate Finance and we had a meeting on non offensive words and the term "Grandfathered" was brought up as offensive. The problem? No one could think of a replacement term. So we will continue to use it.
One time the American Library Association published a list of words they deemed 'militaristic' and 'violent,' and had a proposed list of replacements. They proposed replacing the too-violent "sabotage" with the apparently more-peaceful "undermine," and I asked if by "undermine," they meant the use of sappers to tunnel beneath a besieged city's walls for the purposes of setting demolition charges. They didn't respond. :/

I still get a chuckle out of remembering that the a few years ago, some non-regular random who had happened to post in one of the sales threads, had referred to you two as the "Carothers Brothers"... OK, we all know by now that there is a twin named Jonathan whose name makes things even weirder!
Yep and they used to call him Joe until I came around. 🤣

I wonder what new names are being made up? Obviously you wouldn’t name a girl John, or David. But what if that girl is gonna choose to be a boy? Ya know?
What are they naming them? Cloud, tree, banana? Actually banana would probably be a boy name.
Quite a while back, out of curiosity, I looked up names/nicknames that went from masculine to feminine or non-gender specific (knew a guy in HS named Leslie).

Names like Robin, Kennedy, Leslie, Charlie etc.

OTOH, I knew several Japanese girls in college who picked their own English nicknames, like Lemon, Pepper, Apple... apparently, whatever they found in the kitchen? 😅

So there were objections to the term 'Grandfathered in', but the term was ultimately... Grandfathered in?

🤣🤣🤣

Yeah, please don't call me Jonni.
Growing up, my best friend's father was Larry, and his mom's name was Kyle. There was a colossal argument when she went into labor with their youngest child (this would have been in the early 90s) and the EMTs showed up and just would not believe that the patient's name was Kyle. They literally argued with my mom, who was on the scene, that they wanted the mother's name and not the father's.
