It’s not gimmicky, but I’ve never felt the need for one, even when fishing tournaments.

The unwinders are handy, though!

I do the same with casting gear. One of my kids usually gets voluntold.

With spinning reels I just lay the new spool of line down flat and pull off it from there.

My dad was the much more serious fisherman, and I have a bunch of gear we used back in the day. I've always enjoyed the various lures for fresh and salt water, (neither of us were serious fly fishermen), pliers and filet knives as mentioned above.

I like Boxers as well. (My girl is part Boxer.)

Damn, I'm older than your dad by a few years. Now I need a nap.
