It doesn't take much these days to send folks over the edge. Everyone seems to be angrier and it's leading to rather tragic conclusions. Not long ago, here in Oregon, a couple was heading out to the coast. The husband sprayed some windshield wiper fluid to clear his windshield and that apparently didn't sit too well with the guy driving behind him. Started to tailgate aggressively and he eventually passed the couple. They continued on and ended up passing the angry dude as he was waiting at a rest stop. He proceeded to engage in the same aggression and they eventually pulled over to let him go by while they called 911. The guy pulls up and shoots at them, hitting the husband, and then speeds off. The husband died in wife's arms. They caught the asshole but the deed was done. Tragic.
Glad things didn't turn out worse,
@Grenock , and that you're safe. I hope the repairs or replacement doesn't turn into a huge pain in the ass.
Few years back I was coming home from backpacking in North Carolina. That drive entails going through Cincinnati. It’s one of those city’s where regardless of the day, or time, or weather the traffic will be moderate at best. Speed limit also drops down to 55 mph.
I’m cruising along around 65 in the middle lane coming up on a semi. There are two cars in the fast lane alongside the semi. They are slowly passing him. I put on my blinker, check the side view mirror - there is a pickup 80-100 yards back. Check my blind spot - clear. And get into fast lane.
The pickup that was 80-100 yards back is now about 40-50 yards back and moving. Those other two cars ahead of me in the fast lane are still next to the semi. Pickup behind me waits until he’s about 10 yards off my bumper and jams on his brakes, skids a little and then swerves into the lane to my right and punches it.
I’m about 15-20 feet behind and left of the semi. Obviously he intends to pass me. I did not accelerate. He came within inches of the semis bumper and would have side swiped me if I hadn’t hit the breaks a little and swerved towards the wall.
Of course, then he has to slow down because there are still those two cars in the fast lane - now up towards the cab of the semi.
He was in a Toyota tundra. I know this because he rolled down the back window to flip me off and rage at me. I gave him the finger at this point. I also stayed back a little because he clearly had problems. He had to have been going 95+ and would have had to slow down even if I had never gotten over. But he’s raging like I cut him off or something.
Eventually, the two cars in front of him get past the semi and get over into the middle lane. He had clear lane ahead of him but did not speed off. As I am now clear of the semi (by a good bit) I start to check my mirrors and am about to signal to get back in the center lane. He locks ‘em up. In the fast lane. In moderately heavy traffic.
I lock them up and swerve towards the wall. Woman behind me swerved right. I can hear vehicles making contact all around me. Woman that swerved right either made contact with the semi or swerved hard left to avoid it.
She came in almost perpendicular to the lanes and hit rageboy in the rear right corner of his truck. Which resulted in him making brief contact with the concrete wall on his left.
And then everything is still. And somehow nobody made contact with me. Or me with anybody else.
He gets out of his truck to survey the damage. Throws up his hands - like “how did this happen?”, looks up and realizes what he’s done and jumps back into his truck and speeds off and takes the next exit. I started after him to try to get his plates but he blew a red light and I gave up.
He had to have been effed up, or off his meds, or both.
