Random Thought Thread

I personally like the looks and prefer the buffed antique edgecut micarta handle scales much better than the regular version but those scales listed on the WTS thread are the genuine McCoy (Westinghouse) and therefore more sought after to some CPK collectors / enthusiasts.

Not shilling for the seller but IIRC, those were offered as loose handle scales months by someone else on here who had lucked out by buying the FK which those came with, both original seller and buyer probably not knowing that the scales were the elusive Westinghouse micarta. At first glance, they look kinda similar to the regular plain Jane unbuffed natural micarta in photos but the real thing has black liners and different look / feel in person.

With 2019 almost around the corner and so much technology available at one's mere finger tips, it's just plain insulting that cable / satellite (all the same shyte) play the equivalent of the 3 card Monte with their customers. Ever escalating prices for bundled cr*p that no one ever has the time to watch all that plethora of uselessness! I know that there are some folks on here who walked away from TV years ago, but I am sorry (not really) as I still enjoy watching certain channels.

Luckily, I am somewhat tech "savvy" for a middle aged phart so if I pay some attention to details, I can be a quick study. With that said, fudge you Spectrum formerly known as Charter / Time Warner; same with DirecTV / Dish / Cox and their ilk... Uncle Matty is going live TV via streaming but as a way to mitigate losses with Spectrum, I will still have to be hostage to their Internet service :D The only bad part is that the streaming service which I have chosen / selected sadly does not offer History so no more FiF / KoD for me for the time being. In order to see Jonny / Austin the next season, someone will have to post a link here somewhere when those episodes air

For those technically aware, here is the route I have taken: Apple TV 4K (
32GB) as the main streaming device (Apple fanboy here) and the streaming platform I have subscribed for one month just to try it out is Playstation Vue's core service (50% off for one month and 5 days free trial) to which I can add premium channels like HBO at an extra monthly cost. With this service we can stream simultaneously to 5 compatible devices in the household watching different content on each device (iPhone, iPad, iMac & TV).

Final analysis:

1- I should get out more

2- I'm sure that my Internet bill alone will go up to about $200 per month in about a year. Those evil Internet
providers won't be sitting idle while frugal folks keep cutting the cord

P.S. Those who don't need any frills with a bunch of channels can just try to get a good HDTV
antenna (outside placement types are better as long as there isn't much signal loss through the coax cable) and if you live close enough to a TV signal transmitter, you can enjoy your local channels for free with just a little bit of research and know-how.

For a short time Dish offered custom packages. You could select groups of channels that you actually watched. It didn't last long. We have Cable One. We don't watch sports, religious programs, selling crap channels, Mexican channels, music channels, political channels or political propaganda (CNN, MSNBC, etc.) channels, but we have to pay for them.

I have conceded trying the online services, but my wife can barely keep track of which remote does what and we only have 3, so we are stuck with cable.

Our monthly bill is a tad less than $200. $55 of that is the internet.

Yup Dennis, that's about the right $um for what you're describing. I figured that if I knock that down to about $110 for 2019, I can use that $90 x 12 to get at least a couple more FK2s and an extra DEK1 :)

Speaking of propaganda channels, I'm sure that you get enough of and enjoy binging on Tass USA aka Лиса новости :P :D

Thats what I figured. Worth a shot though!

^ I think that Nathan closed the deal on acquiring the massive block of the antique micarta material after the glory days of FK and EDC-1's regular production runs, or if had the material beforehand he was not offering those handle scales in antique micarta for those two patterns on a regular basis. I remember that he once did an exclusive sale of FKs and EDC-1 pattern in edgecut antique micarta and despite the fact that back then there were not as many CPK'ers around as these days, this place still went nuts (sadly, I didn't land any!). I can try to find that sales thread but just going by pure memory, maybe there were no more than 7 units of FK / EDC1 combined!

Luckily though, the EDC2 handle scales and the EDC1 handle scales happened to become completely interchangeable although there was a minuscule and hardly noticeable change in girth (there's also a thread about it on here) when EDC2 handle scales were put on the EDC1 and vice versa. I managed to snag an extra set of edgecut antique micarta handle scales for my EDC1 but I now consider that as an after-market upgrade! The darn FK handle scales in edgecut antique micarta have eluded me ever since :( I doubt if FK-2's handle scales will be totally interchangeable with the original FK because if for nothing else, there will not be that protruding tang / pry bar at the pummel end of FK2 and also because Nathan does continuous improvements and tweaking to the his handle scales designs, but if for some fluke reason the two iterations should be compatible with their handle scales, you will see a lot of very ecstatic folks on here who will chump at the chance of acquiring those scales for their original FKs.

Hope is eternal :D

With all the recent talk about standard cut vs. edge cut antique micarta, I felt I should repost a couple of older photos to add some color to the discussion.

In the photos below, the Light Chopper, HDFK, and Field Knife all have edge cut antique micarta handle scales. The EDC on the right is standard cut antique micarta. All four have black micarta liners. These photos also show some of the light to dark ranges of color you will see with the antique micarta that Nathan offers.

Here is a close-up of the edge cut antique micarta on the Field Knife. It’s beautiful stuff for sure.

I hope this helps. Good luck with your search gentlemen.

Happy Thanksgiving to all my fellow CPK'ers! Here's to good health, happiness and good company! And may your blades and wits be ever sharp!:p

***No, I'm not gonna do it, but how many other CPK'ers had it cross their minds, even for the briefest moment, of carving the turkey with a BC or other CPK?

My favorite part of Thanksgiving was always the left overs. There usually aren’t any these days! So the past couple of years I go get a small turkey or a big turkey breast and cook it myself on Black Friday. Then I slice it up, bag it up and throw it in the refrigerator so I can have cold turkey sandwiches for a few days.
I may slice it with my HDFK just for kicks!
Happy Thanksgiving CPK’ers!!!
