Random Thought Thread

So..... I'm usually the first tech in the building and as part of my morning routine i like to hide an insurance mascot cut out in different places....

Today was a winner!

I could glance through the office window and see everyone freak out as they caught this in they’re vision lol

My insurance kept hitting me up to get a “free” preventative care check up with my doctor. I hadn’t been to a doctor in over 10 years. Finally I agreed and scheduled a checkup. I told the receptionist and the doctor to code it preventative so I wouldn’t get a bill for it. When the doctor looked at my chart and saw that I hadn’t been to see a doctor in 10 years, he asked me what I was in there for 10 years ago. I told him I was in there for disc space narrowing in my neck, he asked me how was going and I told him. Then I got a bill. I called the receptionist and she told me that they couldn’t code it preventative care because we discussed a pre-existing condition. I told her the doctor directly asked me about it and I just answered. What was I supposed to do, just blank state with no words. Then she had the audacity to tell me it would be immoral and illegal to code it preventative when we discussed preexisting conditions. He totally knew what he was doing. Crazy stuff.

those who give up freedom and liberty for safety deserve neither or something stupid like that.

-Some guy probably

People are sheep for the most part.

One need only go to the political arena echo chamber we have here on the forum to see a fantastic example of people with pre-prescribed belief systems that have been spoon fed to them calling other people sheep. The irony.

Everybody seems to think there are two sides and they fall on one of those sides and the people in the other camp are bad and worthy of our scorn and contempt.

It is pretty striking though, the people calling other people sheep when the reality is, that metaphor works accurately both ways and it is actually very difficult, as a human being, to be completely free of other people's influence and to actually really think for oneself. It's probably impossible. We're all sheep, just a varying degrees. But we all also seem to lack the metacognitive ability to recognize it.

I was not speaking of you

Although you do seem to hold some strange beliefs and I do wonder how they landed in your head.

But I was really more alluding to the second largest problem in this country after healthcare which is the fact that politics has become a spectator sport. Everybody is a armchair quarterback now and everything from the woke mind virus to the radical right are contagious ideas full of intentional misinformation that have been spread by people with an agenda. Politics in this country are every bit as broken as our health care system. Probably also intentionally.

those ideers landed there when I shook off the programming brah.

I used to be the BIGGEST follow the leader no proof needed kind of guy there was.

then I realized that they should have made the planes out of the material that was used to make the passport they found.

and asked questions.

How do you get the glue to set when you're bleeding like a stuck pig? That's the reason I went to the ER for stitches last go round.

(Plus the wound was on two fingers of one hand, I'd not have been able to apply it myself, and I doubt the missus would be inclined to do it for me.)

I like the concept though. Just haven't tried it.
It’s a good idea to keep either Celox Rapid, or Quikclot somewhere readily accessible, specifically to stop bleeding.

I’ve mentioned the benefits of keeping Stop The Bleed kits (or IFAKs) handy, ESPECIALLY for everyone here, with a passion for sharp/dangerous things.

Standard stuff like CAT tourniquets (yes, I realize that’s as redundant as ATM machine), Israeli bandages (I personally prefer OLAES bandages), Celox Rapid and/or Quikclot (the old Quikclot formula was exothermic, generated heat, and could cause burns when applied. The newer formula doesn’t. Celox uses a different ingredient that doesn’t rely on the body’s clotting factor to trigger the cascade, so it works with blood thinners, or folks with hemophilia).

I highly recommend regular folks looking for a Stop The Bleed class, if they have no prior experience or training. It’s very often offered for free, or for just a small fee (which then often includes an IFAK, which more than covers the cost of the fee).

If you sever a tendon on the inside of your hand, you better go to the hospital and get a hand surgeon on it ASAP. Those tendons will retract all the to your elbow and then it is a nightmare to repair. I got a tiny cut on my little finger from by Basic 5, maybe 2mm, but deep enough to sever the tendon. That required surgery to repair and a two inch scar as a reminder. Several rehab visits as well to restore function. The hand surgeon said the tendons on the outside of the hand are much less time critical and easier to repair.
I saw a thread in another forum, of someone’s unfortunate experience with this (they shared their experience as a warning).

The person was using a chisel while woodworking, and as is standard for woodworking, the chisel was razor sharp.

One small lapse in judgement, led to the guy using one hand to hold the piece of wood in place while pushing the chisel towards that hand (one of the first things I remember my dad teaching us about safe edged tools usage; “NEVER cut towards your body/bodyparts”).

The chisel slipped and he stabbed himself in the middle of the palm. Had to go to the ER for emergency surgery. The chisel severed 3 tendons, IIRC, and the reconstructive surgery resulted in a Y-suture/incision that was ~7” long, from the palm, down the wrist and forearm, as the surgeon had to find the ends of the tendons to pull them back up to reattach them.
