Loaded two cords of hardwood into my dump trailer and drove it 1.5 hours on winding mountain roads today to deliver it. I got to the customer’s house and proceeded to lift the dump trailer to empty it. As it reached its apex, the hitch pulled off of the ball. Luckily the safety chains caught it. It did some damage to my bumper but all in all it could have been a lot worse. I couldn’t figure out what happened as the lock and pin were still engaged on the trailer tongue. Then I realized that the ball hitch had been switched to the 2 inch from the 2 5/8 ball. I then remembered that my neighbor had rented a ditch witch that I hauled for her. At the equipment rental place, I just pulled in and the employees hooked up the trailer and unhooked it when I returned it. Unbeknownst to me they had flipped the ball to the smaller one. Considering to roads I had been on I was really lucky that it waited until then to come off. Always check your balls I guess.
