Random Thought Thread

I wonder if a diet where 50% of the calories come from undercooked red meat and the other 50% come from alcohol would be considered unhealthy?

... asking for a friend...

sounds reasonable ... as long as the alcohol has a high enough alcohol content to render any nastys that may come with the undercooked ... (or the really good tasting stuff if you prefer) ... meat.

I have started drinking these session IPAs, that way I can have a couple beers in the middle of the day without getting too hammered

Random playful and completely respectful thought:

“Someone send Nathan a Shiro before he gets way too committed and wrapped up in the idea of making a potentially bulky, heavy and lethargic EDC based folder with a saber grind!”

Ok, want me to do it Nathan? I’ll happily send you a well thrashed NeOn that’s been in my pocket years and desperately needs a sharpening to try out.

^ OK, I'll own up and say that quote emanated from me!

That said, here are my views since (I think that) Nathan appreciates some critical thinking accompanied with some rationale:

- when it comes to folders I am very partial toward slicers / cutters that are not over built prybars so I prefer FFG to saber.

- I think that the 3" EDC balder will be a bit too short for my liking but I also understand that some cities have (or will have) 3" blade restrictions.

- weight is a very important facto and I would like to see a very well milled design that ends up about 4.5 ounces, so see the first comment.

- ultimately everything boils down to price but if in the $500 range, there are may US made folder in that range which do not enthuse me.

I think that when it comes to HT and the metallurgy, no one will have the blade steel itself more dialed in that Nathan can. This is not some BS compliment but a fact based observation based on having been around CPK for almost 3 years now. Also, Nathan will sell a whole load of whatever he decides to finalize because of the following that CPK has established in addition to the fact that whatever handle scales he comes up with will also have lots of thoughts poured into real life use as opposed to a folder which will remain a fidget toy.

Nathan: invest in the best hardware that a machinist of your experience can procure from the best outside suppliers if you're going all in fancy and higher end while also offering great value which is your "sigil". The folder market is akin to a mine laden field!

Yeah man, send it over. Right now it looks like the first CPK folder will be like a Sebenza and a Field Knife had a baby. Exactly like that, sort of.

I will do a light slick flipper at some point, but I have never gone wrong making a sturdy tool made the way I want it as if I am the end user. And I want this first folder to be a folding knife for people who normally use a fixed blade. Not fragile or finicky or slick. Like an iron block naturally aspirated engine. Simple and reliable and durable. So #1 is going to be bronze washers with an oversize pivot but reasonable geometry and designed to fit comfortable in your pocket, like the Seb. Your Seb actually. It's a terrible knife. Ugly, clunky, thumb stud knife with a less than excellent heat treat. It has become one of my favorite knives because it works so well, I never have to give it any special attention, and it was made at a level of manufacturing competency that I think most people wouldn't understand its excellence without being a machinist or engineer etc. I'm sure the Shiro is some next level stuff, but would you baton or pry with it without fear of damaging it as if it were a fixed blade? I think I can do that on a folder (that isn't some dumb heavy overbuilt kludge) and I think it makes sense for our first stab at it. A folding knife for a hikers etc.

Then we'll do some slick stuff. Mark's a wizard at that stuff.

I am a Shiro fan, have had many, have destroyed one and am halfway there on another. They look good, cut well, but are not in the CPK realm of strength and toughness. Man candy, yes, bombproof tool, no.

Oh man, now I’m starting to figit and squirm like a kid waiting to pee.:D Mike

Folders are seldom bombproof and when supposedly made as such, they're usually not made to be meant as cutting tools. Medford makes some folding pry-bars <shrug>

I used to have contempt in term of buying Russian folders and felt that they were just overpriced delicate man jewels. Well after experiences a handful of Shirts, that they are not! Seriously these Shiros can break any CRK and many Spydercos in half by merely looking at them in a mean way (OK, I'm being facetious but just a bit :D ). Shiros are NOT some dainty delicate folder, but can they be destroyed, you bet! I have only owned "serial" Shiros and I don't beat the heck outta them but based on some very distant "engineering" past, I know a thing or two about construction of things. Even serial Shiros are (very) expensive and certain things which are surely outside procurements as opposed to in-house manufacture can be improved upon, IMHO.

My points were made based on the price point. I am sure that a well-priced CPK folder, its first offering the way that Nathan has described it will be very popular. I am going to post this video if you can be bothered to look at someone talking for almost 20 m ins in German and in the meantime I will be looking for that nutcase Russian who tests folders in the most vicious ways in order to really test their mettle to see if he ever did any for Shiros. I am very confident that I can take any of my Shiros easily into the woods as my only flipping / folding knife:

Shiros make for excellent steak knives. I like them, Matt, I truely do. I carry one at work everyday. I do not baby them in the least. Some of my usage I am sure you would consider abusive. That said, that type of use has lead to issues in them when it has not in others. No, I am not referring to overbuilds like the Medfords either. They are very nice, well made knives, but they are certainly not any stronger than the average folder out there. Just my experience.

I hope Nathan goes his own course, or at least works with Lorien on some of that unfinished greatness that I am sure he was working on with Bruce. A CPK version of a Roundhouse would be a helluva thing, and it would have a flipper tab, dammit Nathan!

Lastly, you know Betzner will never sign off on a CPK with Russian DNA, so it ain't happenin'.
