Random Thought Thread

Today I was on a call where software and app developers were showing off their crypto, which supposedly lets you make anonymous transactions and pay literally anywhere in a store. And guess what — they got offended by me.

Because I started asking pretty basic, obvious systemic questions like: what are the fees, how do you actually make money / what generates the profit, and why is this even needed in the first place.

I could already feel them getting annoyed with me.

Then it got even funnier.

They were talking about paying with crypto in literally any shop, even the little one near your house, anonymously, and so on.

So I asked something like:

“You walk into a small local corner shop, want to buy something with crypto. The cashier is standing there waiting for your transaction (with a bunch of conversions and all that jazz, because that’s apparently how their system works).

You already took the goods, start walking out, and the cashier stops you: ‘Wait, the transaction hasn’t gone through yet.’

And you go: ‘Hold on… but it’s anonymous!’”

They love throwing the words “anonymous” and “private” everywhere.

You bought groceries — ANONYMOUS 😅
You paid for delivery — ANONYMOUS 😅
You entered your delivery address and paid for it — ANONYMOUS 😅

Like, what even is the actual concept of anonymity, security, and privacy?
Like, you go through Google to some “anonymous” website, download an “anonymous” app, and install it on a Microsoft operating system (Windows)?
The Tech Bros don’t care about real security or real privacy, as you know.

Cheers, brother. I had oral surgery yesterday, I have six stitches in my gums and an upper lip that looks like an empanada, but sheeeeeeeit, that's what straws are made for (I'm finishing my second beer, btw). 😁
Aren’t you supposed to rub whiskey on yer gums for that? At least that’s what I thought. 🤷🏻‍♂️
