It always amazes and surprises me how little was holding the handle on a Japanese sword.

It seems like the handle would come flying off or break if you swung at something with all your strength….?

Agreed. I was equally stunned when I learned that most Indo-Persian swords were held together with "cutler's resin" made from sand mixed into hot resin - which is to say they just glued the hidden tang into the grip. The same was traditionally used for khukuris and farming tools all around Asia. Evidently it worked well enough for a very long time. It makes me feel better about buying knives without a full tang construction.
