If the main air conditioning system were to fail. My bedroom is still going to have AC.
Oh yeah.

Confirmed the solar+battery backup can run the inverter a/c, and the mini split supposedly can provide 70-80% of maximum heating capacity at ambient temps down to -5f (haven’t tested that part yet).

I generally agree on your sentiment reg. Gun laws and respective European perception, Nathan the Machinist Nathan the Machinist , but not sure where you get your numbers from. This is just to comment on AC, not guns.

EUR:
- about 63k summer heat-related fatalities annually
- population ~743 Mio
US:
- ~48k gun deaths annually, a little more than half are suicides
- population ~343 Mio

Heat death is not really a EUR problem, it’s an Italian problem having ~3 times more heat deaths than the follow up country, Spain.

I’ve never had AC in any place I lived in my life (not by choice except in our current house). Never lived anywhere really hot though, the warmest was CA. In fact, going to university or work, I have often blamed AC for getting sick (contrast between outside and inside).

Reminds me of a trip to Cedar Point (large rollercoaster park, for those unfamiliar).

Standing in the long lines, sweating my ass off in the summer heat and I notice there are BIG fans every so often along the ‘cattle chutes’… but only 1 out of every 3 was on.

I’m doing some quick calculations in my head. The park’s capacity is supposedly 55,000.

Ticket prices vary depending on season passes, discounted tickets, at the gate etc., but at the time, the cheapest discounted single day pass was ~$44, and the at the gate adult passes were $7x(?), so even if I’m estimating $50/person for a 35,000 capacity, we’re looking at $1.75 million. And they can’t turn on ALL the fans? 🤬
I'm convinced that people invented electricity long ago only so that someday in the future we could use air conditioners. If we put it really stupidly and crudely:

a fridge and freezer are basically the same as an air conditioner, right?

Just inside a cabinet.

No matter how you slice it, anything that makes things cooler is an absolutely massive blessing.

Idunno, I googled it:

"Excluding suicides, approximately 16,000 to 17,000 people are killed by firearms in the United States every year." (Pew research center)

"Extreme heat claims an estimated 175,000 lives annually in the broader European region, according to data from the World Health Organization."

^ that's an order of magnitude difference
