Random Thought Thread

Random observation: if Russia wanted to create discord, instability, and division with their interference and misinformation they have been fairly successful. They're winning and we're letting them.

the current division and polarization affecting America right now is a self-inflicted wound. We could stop whenever we want.

Too many people rely upon too few sources of information and are susceptible to the echo chambers. We don't stop to wonder why do we believe what we believe. Too many people "know" what they think about a subject without knowing why they think it.

Politics in the Carothers forum? :D

That is human nature. Why do people tend to stick with one brand of anything when there may be better choices? Some people only buy Fords or Chevys. We have had Toyota Camrys since 1988. I considered other cars,
but still bought another Camry. (We had less than stellar performance with 2 Hondas)

I think people tend to get fixated on certain things. Carothers knives, for instance. :D

Greatly discouraged. But, unfortunately a very prevalent current topic. I think it's a measure of the how bad a political system is working when it's the main headlines every day. It shouldn't be. Like a septic tank, it should only need much attention every few years. It's not supposed to be entertaining nor the center of our universe, but (like a septic system) it becomes very important when it doesn't work right.

Like another topic of conversation that is best avoided in polite conversation, if someone else has a different belief it must be wrong. Leads to nasty disagreements and hurt feelings.

Fortunately, it appears that 2019-nCoV is not highly infective. It appears that close physical contact may be required to transmit the virus person-to-person.
Where did you hear its not very infective?

Lower end of the R0 value puts it at ~twice as communicable as the common flu, this is from the WHO(2.8), Chinese released information puts it at R0 4+, Spanish flu for comparison had an upper estimated R0 value of 2.8.
Further extremely worrying information was confirmed, it is infectious during the incubation period, which is 7-14 days. Its likely at least a few of the people on flights of verified cases such as from China-Australia or the China-USA are likely already infecting others while presenting no symptoms.

Chinese have also claimed its mutated and is even more infectious and containment is now considered impossible.

Yeah. The bits of data being dribbled out, are troubling. The next couple of weeks will give a clearer picture of what the prognosis is outside China.

The original reports of low infectivity appear to have been optimismistic. But we still have no reports of droplet transmission - if it were really infective, one would think that the people traveling on planes with the infectied individuals would have begun to display symptoms by now.

Good news if there can be any so far, no deaths outside of China but other than that it is a fast accelerating infection which the incubation period can be up to 2 weeks meaning that seemingly healthy yet infected parties can transmit the virus without any immediate signs of being infected.
