When Nathan had announced that the UF2 was going to open as a pre-order, I was firmly on the fence. Knives that are classified as being in the weapons category have usually held little appeal to me. I have never carried a knife for self defense (except maybe when I worked for the Sheriff's Office but that was purely for "backup" and I never needed it - I soon started to leave it off my belt). It is hard to fathom a scenario where I would go for my knife before a pistol - I have a lot of training with the latter, next to zero with the former.
Another mitigating factor is the Oregon laws with regards to knives. It all has to do with intent and what a LEO determines in that moment - totality of circumstances and if it adds up to some sort of probable cause. Plus, some (not all) of our knife law is based on vague case law examples and enforcement largely is up to the discretion of the LEO. Often times though, a LEO simply does not know. For example, I sat on a Grand Jury panel last year and one of the cases we heard involved a knife that the defendant was found with. The Detective that was testifying did not have a clue as to whether the sort of knife in question was legal or not so he defaulted to, "It's a weapon so therefore it is illegal" (utter nonsense and completely false) - we, the jurists, had the weapons charge tossed. Typically speaking though, if you aren't an obvious POS, you're going to be alright.
I digress and am rambling - my apologies.
This leads me to my dilemma when I was deciding whether or not to jump in on the UF2 pre-order. On one hand, being a CPK product, it is just downright silly not to jump in on these kinds of opportunities. On the other, it is billed as a Utility Fighter and such monikers have put me off some knives in the past - I am generally not looking for a "combat" or "fighting" knife. However, I have to recognize that so-called fighter or combat knives (like the Ka-Bar and such) also make proficient cutting tools and so then I think about the "Utility" part of this knife's labelling. Someone here mentioned that going with the Dagger grind, or sharpening the top edge, etc., removes the "Utility" factor (hence the DEF relabeling) and it becomes purely a weapon - that makes it difficult for me to be able to justify its purpose when carrying it (POS or not). As a result, it would be relegated to the safe and would just be ogled at and fondled from time to time.
However, going with the standard grind gives this knife a LOT of utility and embellishing other things (like the scale choices, finish, and possible sheath upgrade) can still go a long way towards making this a pretty special knife - one that can serve dual roles without being obvious about it.
All that to say, I did not go with the "everything bagel" option but it will be special in other ways. I am rambling while working - sorry, folks.
