Yesterday, I made a tongue-in-cheek remark regarding the Keffeler that I didn't have a large enough bench stone.
Out of curiosity, what is the largest CPK that folks feel comfortable sharpening with a bench or hand held stone?
What about a manual system like an Edge Pro or other jig...but not a powered system using belts?
Curious how some of you contend with the larger pieces when they need maintenance.
The Diafold works just fine on MC and Behemother length blades. Heck, I've used it to sharpen a 24" blade latin machete.Yesterday, I made a tongue-in-cheek remark regarding the Keffeler that I didn't have a large enough bench stone.

I hear you. I don't mind using a Diafold on any of my machetes...but I don't know if I'd be comfortable sharpening a long $700+ knife with it and possibly end up with undulating bevels. Most of my larger blades...Brute, RTAK, Goloks, Machetes are nothing I'd lose any sleep over if the bevels weren't perfect. That said, I've also got DMT bench stones.
Never used a Wicked Edge or Edge Pro, but I have a Tsprof that doesn't getbused often (the Diafold is a lot quicker/easier for touching up edges). That said, wouldn't something the length of the K18 require repositioning the blade in a Wicked Edge/Edge Pro etc. several times?

Probably why I've never invested in high end knives of a certain length. Plus, I have my Gransfors Bruks and saws for larger work.
(My EdgePro Apex sits alongside my shop sink wondering why it's there. Basically to know it's there if I ever need it...which is about once or twice a decade. I prefer freehand, and simple to complex.)
I think you and I have different goals with our sharpening. I'd want my show pieces to have reasonably clean and blemish free edges and bevels, but I'm not interested in doing more than clean cutting phone book paper in both directions for most knives...as in ones meant for carry and use.I've freehand sharpened my whole life until last year. One of the things that my Wicked Edge system did was show me how terrible my freehand sharpening is. The blades were still sharp, but the bevels were ugly and uneven when examined closely and one bevel would be about three degrees off from the other bevel. With my Wicked Edge I reprofiled them all to perfect bevels.

I also prefer not to use the Edge Pro even if it is superior to manual. I'm not interested in taping up blades to prevent scratching. I'd just rather not be bothered, generally speaking...and mine is set up and ready to go at a moment's notice.
I like sitting with my stones and doing the work. ("Stones" might mean diamond, ceramic, aluminum oxide, SiC, or a natural stone on any given day.)
Perfection is not something I seek. I enjoy the doing.
well. I sharpened a 1311 on a bench stone. so I guess 13 inches. never had to sharp up a CPK well... ever. so I guess that's the best answer I can give.Yesterday, I made a tongue-in-cheek remark regarding the Keffeler that I didn't have a large enough bench stone.

Just a heads up, dry sharpening D3V on a 1x30 will overheat and damage the edge.well. I sharpened a 1311 on a bench stone. do I guess 13 inches. never had to sharp up a CPK well... ever. so I guess that's the best answer I can give.
I like to use a 1x30 most though.
yup. I wouldn't touch a CPK to a 1x30. Atoma diamonds all the wayJust a heads up, dry sharpening D3V on a 1x30 will overheat and damage the edge.
