Random thoughts on sheaths.....

You "asked for snake and got elephant" ... and you are complaining?? Really...humm. Seems like a trade up, if you got it for the same price. Did it look bad?

First a disclaimer- Chuck's a trusted friend.

What a ludicrous reply. There's a difference between an order and a grab bag.

2knife; I was staying out of this thread for obvious reasons, but your comment on thread and stitches caused me to need to reply. As an example, the two sheaths posted by Kevin Jones above are stitched with 207 thread which is a medium weight thread while the finer more decorative stitches are 69 wieght thread. Most hand stitchers use either 5 cord linen or artificial sinew, both of which appear heavier, but the tensile strength of the machine stitched 207 at the stitch spacing you see will stand up to very, very rough use while still looking neat and adding to the attractiveness of the sheath. I have used 207 on saddle skirts.....just to make the point and the wear and tear there is generally much greater than a sheath will endure.

Please do not take this response as argumentative. I just wanted to assure you if I could that the lighter threads are generally plenty strong in sheath applications.

As for Kydex. I have owned two. The little one that came with my Caffrey EBK works quite well, but, as Steven can attest to, the other one was not so great.

The kydex sheath that Joe sent with the McWilliams fighter purchased from him was singularly the biggest POS sheath that I have EVER owned, and Paul made a new sheath for that one.

The kydex sheath for the EBK is just fine, that is a using knife, it gets used...frequently...better with the mini Tek-lok, right Ed?

The sheaths that Paul made for me are pictured below(white one look familiar, Anthony?):

Steve Filicietti made beautiful sheaths and even better fighters. What ever happened to him. Heard he had stopped making knives. What a shame.

Here's a nicly done primitive by Karen Shook.

And one by Chris Kravitt (Treestump Leather). Chris did a real nice job of matching this one to the handle of this Fisk.

My pleasure....a word of advice....take the time to communicate fully what you think you want with Paul....he requests preference input, so that you are completely satisfied.....tell him what you like, and you will get it.

I think, with all the photo submissions from fellow Forumites, that it shows how COMPLETE the whole package is with a good sheath....don't you agree?

Great thread and pictures!!

Let me add that I recently met Paul at the Spirit of Steel Show and spent the better part of an hour discussing not only sheaths but saddles and just about anything else made of leather. And I came away from this understanding that his quality of work is only exceeded by his dedication to his customers satisfaction :D

Good advice if you have something specific in mind. I have several of Paul's sheaths. I have gotten to the point where I usually just send him the knife and tell him to do whatever he thinks works well. I have never been disappointed.

thomason....that's what imight wind up doing....the only equest i ha from paul is that it sits horizonatlly......he said i need a pouch style sheath .....i guess any tooling or decoration will just match the carving....that was my request...as close as he could match it-well....that's up to him.....we'll see what it looks like soon enough i guess......ryan

OK, I have some news: I purchased a Wolfe Loerchner dagger recently. (Photos soon). Yes, it came with a Bill's suede zipper pouch. Of course it has no sheath.

I do NOT think it appropriate to use a leather sheath on this knife. Completely out of character. My inclination, if there was some form of presentation or holding aspect to it, would be a display stand. Thoughts?

Certainly not leather....but not display stand either....all metal, n/s or sterling sheath with red velvet lining would be my vote....like the Michael Price pieces, but updated.

Julie Warenski-Erickson could do it.

I like display stands if done in a way to capture the essence of the knife.
A silver sheath would be appropriate too but kind of expected.

Will look forward to seeing it.
