While I was at work the other day, I happen to notice the distinguishable Spyderco wire pocket clip protruding from a customer's pocket. Now I've seen many a pocket clip walking around the town that I work in, however most belong to lower quality blades. Having not seen a Benchmade, Spyderco, Kershaw, etc. clip in quite some time, I decided to take a chance and ask the guy if that was a Manix 2 in his pocket. Indeed it was! We had a nice little chat and he asked if I was a BF member. I was pretty excited about the whole encounter. Woohoo! You guys actually do exist! He graciously offered to let me handle his Manix (first time holding the light weight version). Unfortunately I was unable to return the favor. But his girlfriend/fiance/wife/sister/friend had a purple Delica! It was an amazing day. I also forgot his user name and real name (I was too excited!). So this post was made in hopes that he might read it. I also wanted to see how many of us look at other peoples pockets for clips. Do you ever strike up a conversation? How often do you recognize the brand? Is it bad manners to ask/comment on the clip/knife? Have any of you randomly met a fellow BF member? If so, HOW!?!?

Any time I have a random encounter with my brother. I suppose that would count, right? He's a total steel snob.

If I see a quality knife I will try to strike up a conversation. Unfortunately I've never seen even a Kershaw in the wild. :grumpy:

Oh, on a side note, I've only seen two knives in the wild (Being used by complete strangers), both being opinel no 8's, the carbone version. Didn't bother to strike up a conversation as I didn't think much of it at the time.

I see tons of nice knives out n about! I only ask once in a while. Only guy I've met who is a BF member is a dude I sold a knife to a long time ago. He was a prick. Couldn't be bothered to give the time of day. Didn't want to talk knives even for one second. He just hurriedly gave me the money, I gave him the knife, he jumped in his car and off he went. He didn't even pull the blade out of the sheath and look at it! Don't remember his user name.

I have never seen or met anybody interested in knives "in the wild" I went to a swat police convention earlier in the spring in Verona NY where my dad was with his swat team for the city and I saw cops with benchmade and cold steel clips but I'm not sure what the models were

Once a year I go to this big convention center near my home, the Galleria. You wouldn't believe how many knife people you see. :)

That's because you live in the land of Dixie my friend. Knife people are everywhere down here too.

I was the same way when I found out a classmate of mine was a knife guy as well. We had know each other since freshman year, but neither had thought the other would be into knives so we never knew. I was pretty excited when I found out though. Im not sure if hes a member here, but I was actually surprised how much he knew about knives. While we were chatting the first time, I kept wondering just how technical i should get, but every time i said something simple or vague and tried to play down my knowledge so i didnt sound too nerdy, he would just be like "oh yeah you mean (insert detailed knife nerd comment)" and im like "yeah! Exactly!"

Up until that point, I wasnt sure there were any others out there as into knives as me, let alone in my own grade at my own school! Damn, other knife nuts DO exist!

Hi Sam, glad the yoopies get such nice folders. I'm big on Spyderco; love 'em.
I grew up in lower pen, but loved your country up there. I meet with one BF friend occasionally for brekkie. He's close to Tampa, so we meet halfway. Nice guy.
Would have enjoyed Blade Show, but couldn't get there. maybe next year; lots of BF guys there.
take care.

My best friend actually carries an Al Mar Sere 2k - because he liked mine so much, and kinda "stole my mojo"..... However he is not on bladeforums. Not even really a knife Knut. He just liked what I was carrying at the time so he bought one at the gun show.

I met one guy at my job i forgot his name and he didnt tell me his username but he was telling me how hes into microtech auto OTFs and that his wife lost a microtech ultratech in a car she traded in. Fast forward an hour i met another member same deal, no name info but he had a custom pen that was damascus and carbon fiber and he had a stainless df2 and he told me his daughter who was with him also had a knife collection going on. Hes also a member of usual suspects network. Was a very good and fun day full of knife talk. I love when knife people go to my dept in my job.

BTW I'm the only knife guy in my large group of friends, most of them think I need psychological help. They don't see what I see in a knife, and to spend $500 on a knife is insane in their eyes.

Oh well. Their loss!

Same with my wife. But I'm supposed to look the other way when a new Coach bag shows up in the house. LOL!

Believe it or not in my 30 plus years as LEO the majority of guys including SWAT don't get too excited about guns or knives. If you tell them you are carrying a $300. Plus knife they think you are from another planet. They spend much more for their cool sunglasses than they would ever spend on a quality knife.

That's funny- A local LEO asked me to see my knife while I was at my mail truck cutting straps (S30V Blur). He whipped out his Task Force Ebay knife. I fixed the blade wobble and sharpened it up for him on the spot (we all carry that equipment in out lunch boxes....right?:o). Ended up selling him a Blur tanto the next day!

I ran into another bfc member in a Scottsdale restaurant a few years back. That's the only one I know of. It IS a cool feeling, though, knowing the names on here actually belong to real people.
