A while back, I posted that I had got a local maker from Mount Airy, NC to start working on a knife for me. This guy doesnt advertise much, if at all, and he exposure suffers because of it. But, in this area, people know he rolls out quality knives and sheathes, and he came highly recommended to me. I went to talk with him, and check out his shop, and I gave him a sketch and some ideas about what I wanted in my knife, and he got to work on it. A month later, here it is. The knife has a 3-1/2" A2 steel blade, stainless bolster, and a green canvas micarta handle for an OAL of 8". The hand-sewn leather sheath is set up for horizontal carry, per my request.

The fit and finish on this knife are second to none, and it is easily the nicest custom I have ever handled. The edge came razor sharp, and makes short work of meat and wood. The handle fits into my hand like, well... a custom :p and gives a firm grip on the knife. The balance is excellent, right behind the stainless bolster. While not flashy and obviously made to be used, it has a certain rugged beauty to it that speaks to me.

Lastly, the sheath. Having recieved sheaths from knife makers before, the difference between a knife maker and a sheath maker becomes apparent, at times. Not so with Mr. Hicks. His sheath is both durable and eye-catching. It grips the knife solidly, leaving no worries about the knife being lost while woods-wandering. The designs (something he did without my bidding) add a rustic artistry to the overall apperance of the package, and I couldnt be more pleased.

If you are in the market for a new custom, and want to try some quality work from the Blue Ridge Mountains, then Randy Hicks would be an excellent choice, and one you will not regret.

P.S. Forgive my amateur photography skills, they truly do not do this knife justice.

Moving to Knife Reviews & Testing Forum.

There are other forums on BF. designed for this type of post. Please make it a habit of posting reviews in the correct forum.

LeeCQC, nice review, nice design and obviously beautiful result. Its a good feeling when when you find a skilled maker that works well w/ you. Mr. Hicks looks like a such a one. Enjoy your new baby!

Oh, I too thought this review mighta fit in WSS 'cause it looks like a small hunter kinda knife... but maybe not.

Well, I put it in WSS because we review bushcraft/outdoors knives there all the time, and I feel like this knife fits into that category, and I wanted to share it with the members there, since they might not frequent this section of BF.

I'm going to check him out.
