Range series

I will fully acknowlege that I am probably, make that undoubtedly, in the minority. Yes, the cross bar lock is good and safe lock. It seems though that at one point Benchmade folders were exclusively cross bar locks with perhaps one or two exceptions. Now that the patent has run out at least ten more companies have jumped on the cross bar lock bandwagon.

Just another reason why modern pocket knives leave me cold and uninterested.
I get it.
I have a variety of modern folders, but don't carry them much.
What's to get excited about when I really like the old stuff.....?
😊

Exactly! There are so many different configurations that have been well thought out and have purpose! Give me wood scales, Delrin scales, stag scales, or my recent affection that has been brewing for a long time, Micarta scales. The textures of the different materials. I could go on, but I won't.

Are these hollow ground? I think I will wait for discount or maybe they will make it to the custom shop.

I pre-ordered a full size and mini from Knife Center months ago. I've checked my email more than a couple of times today hoping to see a shipping notification. :)

Nothing yet...

Update - looked on the Knife Center website and I see that the order status shifted to approved today. I only pre-ordered from Knife Center because the last time I wanted a new regular production knife, one of the Alpha series a couple of years ago, they came in stock at all the retailers months before they hit Buck's website. So I thought I would save some time this time around - and they end up hitting everywhere all at once on the same day. The goal is to get a full size and mini in hand to let the kids choose if they want one for Christmas, and if so, which one. And of course, to get one in my own pocket. :)

I have a Mini Range Pro that was pre-ordered, shows approved as of today as well, so hopefully they'll be shipping out in the next day or so.

It's a tough choice everyday for me between the classic Bucks and the new models. For years, I only carried classic models or Bucklites, but then I found some of Buck's newer designs to be too sweet to pass on. Then, I caught the "auto" bug. Now, I find my self debating which knives to carry every morning. I might need to set up a schedule so I can fit all of favorites into the rotation.

I can't wait to whip out the Range in front of my Benchmade buddies to show them how slick the "old man" knife brand does the crosslock, with Magnacut to boot.

I've been looking forward to these since I first heard about them earlier this year. Ordered my 791 in green. I like that it is a little bigger and a little lighter than my 845 Vantage Force. The 845 has been my most carried knife for more than a decade, virtually everyday. It's a good all-arounder and I expect the 791 could be even better.

Interesting tidbit from Buck's website:

The Range Series is just the beginning. You’ll see this crossbar lock construction appear in upcoming knives across our lineup, from field-focused folders to technical EDCs built for modern life.
Maybe in some more affordable knives and not just in their premium line up?
Glad to see that there will be others coming. I don’t need Magnacut or a fancy steel for my EDC that will mostly be used to open letters and boxes on a regular basis. I’d be very happy with something a little bit lighter with 420 steel at a lower price.

I grabbed a 791 154cm version full size one in grey from Bucks site......id prefer it was 3.5" blade but close enough......

and one of those 10% off coupon worked on it....first time that's ever worked for me being bcci on full website pricing items......

The Range 791 Pro with FRN grips and CM-154 steel is pretty appealing, especially at the lower price than the Elite.

I like it a lot. If I had my druthers, I’d have preferred hollow-grind. From videos I’ve seen the tip looks a tad thick when compared to the overall thickness of the blade. If you look from the spine down the taper to the point does not get as acute as I’d like.

While I'm not feeling urgency to order one right now, I'm sure I'll get one at some point.

The full size Pro looks like the way to go. The mini would be too small for my hand. Like referenced in that Gideon's tactical video, I hate that feeling of an in-between knife where my pinky keeps slipping off.

The more I look at these the less I like them. Price is kinda steep. A good value knife I’m less critical of materials. The 112 slim is a great value knife I have one and would never complain about the materials used. But at these price points I’m more picky on what I want. Last year they released that alpha series with three price levels. I liked something about all three of them but no single one did it for me. Seriously why hollow grind all of them except the magnacut one? Back to the range, if/when I get one the 154/frn will be my pick.

If they did the elite with that marbled carbon fiber I’d hit that like a duck on june bug.
