Just went to REI yesterday and grabbed a couple bike inner tubes. I can't believe some online stores sell these as "RANGER BANDS" and people actually buy them for a premium. The Sales Associate at REI was really cool and simply gave the inner tubes to me with a confused look. He asked why I would want them. When I told him how they are used, he thought it was a cool idea and went back to get some for himself.

Because of this experience, I wanted to post a picture how they are used. If you have one, add it here. This is a great accessory that some folks still aren't aware of. Let's spread the word.

I have seen them being used as a firestarter, or rather fire extender once added to your burning cotton.

I'm a big believer in up-cycling, but that's an excellent execution of it! Well done. I actually use inner tubes to build giant slingshots with. ;)

Moodino,

I'm a slingshot nutjob. You have to post a picture! Dude, we need to party!

Kevin, if you love slingshots, here's one you'll love:

I LOVE that squirrel launcher! I wish I had thought of something like that when I was growing up in the midwest.

Now that I am out here in AZ with a few kids, I don't even need to buy the inner tubes...well, at least not brand new ones. The kids regularly puncture their tires on cactus needles, thereby providing me with a steady supply. Hmmm, I am seeing a side business opportunity here...;)

i've made them in all different sizes from different tubes. road tire tubes make little tiny bands that hang onto a bic pretty well, depending on what size you get. i have also made them from motorcycle innertubes, those are pretty big bands right there. the trick to those is making them pretty narrow or else they are almost impossible to get around anything.

i have found that i don't really have a whole lot of uses for ranger bands, but when you need them you really need them. they are good to keep around for those just in case situations.

I always keep a few on my gear. Keeps stuff closed, good for fire, and I always have a few longer ones with nice holes punched in them for making slingshots and arrow launchers.

i have a pile of old mtn. bike inner tubes, that i cut up and use as ranger bands... they work great..

The are great. Ive been using them for years. I like that with the bike ones you can choose the size you need.

Bike shops are a great place to go for them. I grab some every time im in there.....

I love 'em too! I like wrapping a mag bar with them, along with some duct tape and a piece of hacksaw. Makes for a pretty idiot-proof backup. Also nice for lashing straps down, etc. Cheap and versatile.

Kev,

I had almost this exact experience at REI last year! The clerk was happy to give me a couple of used tubes, but was curious what I wanted them for. When I told him his response was "Cool!" and he turned to tell a coworker. :)

reat idea guys I will have to pick some up. Great pictures to I like the Becker Necker with the fire steel. And the mini buck neck knife on the back of your fixed blade sheath. Great setup texas tony. What sheath/knife is that?

So how long do they last for you guys? I've got a bunch that need recycling but I've seen them crack and crumble due to age and exposure.
