Ranger Knives?

I've been looking for ~$100 fixed blade lately, and someone pointed me to Ranger Knives, the Ready Detachment series in particular.

I dug around and found a good review, but I figured I'd ask around here and see if anyone owns one. In particular, I'd like to know if listing of 7.5" blade on the RD-7 means 7.5" from beginning of edge to the point, of from the handle scale to the point.

I'm looking for a knife to replace my Junglee Hattori as a general field/utility knife, and this definitely looks like it fits the bill. I also like the look and price. I'm sure I don't really NEED a knife that big, but the RD-7 would fit the Spec-Ops sheath I have perfectly(and I really, REALLY, like that sheath).

So, anyone have any experience with these things?

Scrap Yard is coming out with the Scrapper 5 at some point tonight. $100 bucks, great steel, lifetime warranty, muddy handles, multiple color options on blade and handle.

What's not to luv?

Just read the whole post...sorry to go off topic!
Rangers have a great rep, know lot's of folks that enjoy them and beat the hell out of them.
But, go look at the scrapper! hah!

Ranger RD's are definitely some of the best knives for the money, they're built very tough and have a great warranty (in failure including abuse and they'll fix it or replace it). Great guy to order from, also if your open to smaller blades I'd look at RAT cutlery they have some good ones pretty much starting at where the RD 7 leaves off in size (rat 6=6.5in blade) and going down from there, same great warranty as well.

+1 on the new scrapper being released sometime tonight as well http://shop.scrapyardknives.com/main.sc heres the website it'll be available for ordering for a couple of weeks only so if you do want it decide quickly, its 5.25inch blade 3/16 in thick or less, so not as thick, but will have better edge retention than the Rat or Ranger, same warranty as well

Thanks guys.

I already considered RAT. They seem to have a helluva reputation, but not quite the size I want. I'm kinda dead-set on the 7-7.5" blade length. For me, that length just fits. Not too big, but still good for chopping.

Same goes for the Scrapyard. SERIOUSLY tempted, but just a little short for my purposes.

And other recommendations are far from off-topic. I'm always looking for new ideas. Thanks guys!

You might want to take a look at the Becker BK-7. I think it may be just what you're looking for, and it's less than $100.

Actually, that's what I was looking at before I was pointed to Ranger.

If I did go with the Becker, the handles bother me(odd shape and hollowed scaled), so I'd want to replace the handle scales with tan canvas micarta. Not overly difficult, but that crap is a little pricey and adds to the overall cost (and I sure as hell ain't shelling out the $45 for micarta replacement scales on Ebay).

I don't know whether or not you've ever handled a Becker, but those handles are outstanding. Comfortable, and tough as nails. Not to worry, though: Becker/Ka-Bar are releasing after market Micarta scales (probably in May, from what Ethan Becker said). The BK-7 is one hell of a lot of knife for the money (maybe for any amount).

5160 is alittle more corrosion resistant then 1095. I own 2 rd's and would recommend them highly.

As HolyRoller says, we're always looking for ideas. :)
And this is a size range that's very popular lately.

But there is no practical downside to Ranger, seriously heavy duty.

I love my RD-9. I use it quite a bit chopping small to medium size fire-pit fuel. It is the best production knife I own and will go toe to toe with many of my customs.

This thread really makes me want to order a Satin RD7 that I really don't have the money for.

Thanks a lot everyone.

MY RD-7, aside from fit and finish, has been every single ounce as effective as the Busses I have owned. They were meant for work, not for the safe or beauty contests.

I have a few Rangers (including customs), been happy with the lot of them.

I can't speak for the Ontario versions of Ranger knives, but the Rangers from their site have been great. As has been mentioned, the Ka-Bar Beckers aren't bad, either. I don't have any experience with the Ka-Bar versions of the Beckers, either. I do have & enjoy my Camillus made BK9, though.

Good luck with whatever you get.

I have an RD 7, and would not get another. The fit and finish are just not of the same quality as Becker Knives, or some of the other brands that are discussed in this thread. It really reminds me of a kit knife hastily assembled. That, plus a lot of problems ordering it, have steered me away from this brand.

Becker, Swamp Rat, and others have always given me good service. Good luck in your search!

Not to derail, but, does ranger make knives for sale under Ontario's brand? I was on knive center and there are Ontario Ranger RDs that look exactly like all the knives on the Ranger knives website.....
