Ranger Knives?

Yes. Ranger did/does have a contract with Ontario. Not sure of the duration or models specified in the contract.

Official announcement from Justin Gingrich (president of Ranger Knives) dated 5/29/08:

Ontario Knife Company announces the acquisition of Ranger Knives

Franklinville, NY- Ontario Knife Company announced the acquisition of Ranger Knives assets; Blue Earth, MN at the 2008 Blade Show, Atlanta GA.

Ontario Knife Company and Ranger Knives are two industry leaders of American made fine edged products for the military, tactical and commercial markets. Existing and new Justin Gingrich designs will be manufactured and sold under the “OKC Ranger Series ™” from it’s facility in Franklinville, NY.

Nick Trbovich Jr., President of Ontario Knife Company stated, “Justin will be a great addition to the OKC team for many years to come. We are excited about his continued interest and future involvement in expanding the OKC Ranger Series ™, development of new products, participation in marketing efforts and providing input on production and quality”. Trbovich added, Ontario Knife Company continues to aggressively identify and pursue all business opportunities that add value to Ontario Knife Company and our customers”. Ontario Knife Company is one of America’s Oldest Knife Companies.

Justin Gingrich, President of Ranger Knives commented “I am very pleased that two great American knife companies can come together for the betterment of the industry. I am very excited and look forward to seeing the product line and business relationship continues to grow. I am confident that Ontario Knife Company will produce both the existing and new products with the same quality and attention to detail that Ranger Knives is known for.’

I would imagine that Ontario would up the quality in overall fit and finish (there were some issues with Ranger handles). Not sure about what, if any, changes to the actual blades might be (steel, grinds, etc.). I own neither a Ranger original, nor an Ontario model for comparison.

Ontario rangers are made to the same specs as how Justin made them. Same heat treat. Being that ontario produces in mass, there may be a few that slip through qc, but many guys on the ranger forum have ontario rangers and have put them through their paces with no issues that I know of so far.

Hmm, I'm really liking the OKC Ranger RD-7. The partial serration option looks handy...

Anyone have an opinion on a partially serrated blade like this? A good idea? Generally useless?

Biggest difference would be the warranty. OKC Rangers are covered by Ontario obviously, and don't carry Justin's "no questions asked lifetime guarantee", which IMO is the most solid warranty I've ever seen. I remember when the destruction test of the RD7 took place Justin said he'd replace it "no questions asked" as per the warranty in spite the damage being intentional. I don't even think Busse goes that far.

Rat Cutlery has the same warranty btw.

While I would much prefer dealing with Justin over ontario with a warranty issue. Justin has stated that the warranty on the Ontario Rangers is the same as his warranty. I dont think Ontario offers that on all of their models, could be wrong. But the warranty on OKC Rangers should also be a no questions asked, you break it, they fix it warranty.

I don't suppose anyone owns an RD-6 and an RD-7, and doesn't mind posting some comparison pics with a ruler?

I had recently bought Ontario Rangers, two RD-6' and one RD-7.and one of the RD-6 knives had the handle not so smooth aligned along the tang(not much but sticking out a little, maybe that happens more often?).the others were just fine.smooth.
and the tip of that one RD-6, was a little bit bend too.which I just bend back by sticking it in a piece of wood and then using some pressure on it.
I dont know if that is the right way to fix it but dont know what else to do
:-P.

overal I really like these Ranger knives, especially the RD series.I also bought this Ranger RAK.
and the Shank.

I also have bought this RAT-6(RATCUTLERY) which was totally cool also (sharp, sturdy blade.smooth micarta/tang finish)

This is the first time I've heard anyone mention any problems with handles on Justin's knives. Please elaborate.

I have 2 Ontario Rangers, a RD-4 and a RD-7, both have great fit and finish, especially the edge grinds. The only problem I had with the handles was the square, blocky feel. A dremel tool, some sandpaper, and a few minutes took care of that. I really like these!

I like the thickness and the width of the blade and that it is being flat grinded.
so it is very sharp plus you have the strength too.

the handle feels good for chopping and all other tasks .i like the size.

these are really tough blades.
I saw this nossguy with the RD-7(on youtube) ,the guy with the hockeymask hacking blocks of concrete to pieces easily.
the fact that the tip broke didnt surprise me.it is a bit delicate and ramming it into a metal plate and then jerk it front and back...hum..?
this tip is good for penetration.not for using it as a crowbar.
