Ranger RD9 and Scrapyard Dogfather Chopping

Great knives....dont take this wrong but great looking girl too:thumbup: :D, I dont get enough pics of my two loves;)

Beautiful knives and beautiful family, what more could a guy want?
I will hopefully be picking up a ranger soon, this thread made me decide on the RD9, but now I need to decide on handle color and material.

Thanks guys - all compliments are appreciated!

I've got 3 Rangers and I'm sure I'll end up getting more. Justin is great to deal with - I recommend Ranger 100%.

That is a nice recurve. And I love that blue G10.

oh yah, great review. If you get a chance compare the recurve to a regular RD9 if you have one, I'd like to see your impressioon of the difference in the same design.

Liam, you won't regret the Ranger, but I guess you won't regret a DF either. I prefer micarta or G10, but the resiprene is confortable over extended use.

Cobalt - I don't have a regular RD9 as of yet.

I have some more chopping pix of the Dogfather at the following links (at SY forum) - tons of pix - if you liked this review you'll love these! The Dogfather is a ridiculous chopper. I didn't like ResC at first, but on a chopper, I'm in love with it! Again, the below threads will really be worth your while if you're thinking about or already have a Dogfather.

Sure did - he can hook you up w/ different color options, handle materials, & spacers, etc.

Hi diceman, just wanted to confirm: by spacers, do you mean a material that goes entirely between the slabs of G10 and the tang, for instance?

Yup - thats it, precisely. On my RD9 that is pictured, it has Blue G10 grips and Black spacers. Justin will take care of you though - the spacer options I listed above is all that he has available (I know that) but he can probably work with you on grip colors and materials.

Hey i just orderd my RD9 recurve, I actually sent him a pic of yours diceman, so it will be the same with orange micarta.
I was planning on an original with a spear point, but I guess thats the old style of blanks he is out of, so clip point it is.
Will Justin give me a convex edge if I ask? The edge is one area of the blade that wasn't discussed.

Scrapyard and Ranger knives are priced similarly - Ranger knives are available for order pretty much any time, Scrapyard only sells their knives in "releases," otherwise you need to check the exchange forum here to buy some on the secondary market.

Liam - I'm assuming that justin will grind you knife however you want. Mine is razor sharp! I touched up my RD4 on the sharpmaker, and stropped the forward portion of the RD9 blade, and they both shave effortlessly.

Good snag by the way, you'll love it!

And Liam - convex grind would be nice, but just so you know, I haven't had any issues w/ edge retention or rolling as of yet w/ the RD9 or RD7 (both have done some chopping)

Great pics! Those are the best looking Rangers I've ever seen, and your wife's really cute, too.
The RD7 blanks from Busse were similar to the old Steel Hearts. That RD9 with recurve and skullcrusher is all Justin, though.

Hard to beat those Resiprene C handles. I still use a Basic 9 after having bought, and gotten rid of, several knives to possibly replace it(including a RD7 and FSH).

i may have looked over this in the thread but what sort of steel is used for your RD9 and RD4? is it 1095? i really like the RD4 but i didn't see it on the website, is there another one other than rangerknives.com?

Hey, I know you didn't ask me this but Justin at Ranger Knives can make you basically whatever you want. If you email him and ask for a RD4..he'll get it done. I just got my RD7 in the mail..wow, that thing is nice.

5160 steel - the RD4's are all "customs" at this point, but the price is the same as the RD6. Justin will be adding an RD4 to the regular lineup very shortly. A lot of the more current info will be on the Ranger forum hosted at knifeforums.com.

Thanks for the info. Justin has been doing a lot of different handles for people lately - a red G10 set (4/9) and blue/black G10 set (4/6/7/9) were just done recently. Can't beat his prices either!

Diceman, nice to see you getting out with your family. That's the way it used to be for lots of us growing up:thumbup:

More info on the RD4 as a camp knife please, and the makers' info, 'cause I don't recall seeing that as I'm new here:cool:

Tracker - Jeeps link is good - 1/4" 5160 steel - not a standard "production" model but you can get one from Justin starting at $90 (same price as RD6) w/ standard grips and black crinkle coat. Upgrades are very reasonable from there. Just give him a call.

Jaraxle - those pictures were at Fort Fizzle, Lolo National Forest, outside of Missoula, MT.
