I have an RD-9 (10" blade) and RD-7 (8" blade). Both are flat ground, satin finished, spear-point, and bird's head grips. Steel is 5160. My understanding is that these blades came from some guy named Busse.
I thinned out the edges some and took the edges off the bird's head.
The knives chop just fine. They are certainly superior to my much-shorter A-1. I have no A-2 to compare. The edges held up as I would expect from properly heat-treated 5160.
A spear point is not intended for fine work, and I would not use a knife this size for fine work unless I had no other.
