Ranger Sheath vs Ontario RAT Sheath

There have been some criticism of both RD sheaths and RAT sheaths in past years. Neither was as good as it could have been. Both had design flaws especially pertaining to the placement of the retaining strap. Apparently both companies were going to improve their respective sheaths. Has anybody bought one of these knives (eg Ranger RD 6 or RAT 7) recently? If so, have the sheaths improved?

Please confine comments to discussions of the sheaths. OK?
(The knives have been discussed already.)

I picked up the complete line of the Ranger rd series and the only thing's i don't like about the sheaths are that they use velcro rather than a snap to hold the knife in and i don't like the high placement of the strap which i think should be lower however this is a minor problem that i am going to fix as soon as i pick up a snap kit and install lower riveted snap straps.

I have a TAK from Ontario and i love the knife, except its handle heavy, but i hate the sheath. I am looking for a custom sheath for it. Anyone know of a custom sheath maker for a TAK let me know. I dont want a high riding sheath. Im a fat guy.

I might know one.........

The strap on the Ranger sheath has been moved from middle of handle to top of handle for better retention. The strap is now 1" wide, older style is 1.5" wide.
In all other respects, it remains the same sheath as far as I can determine.

I'm not sure which one I've got, anyone got pics of old and new?I've got a RAT 7 and the retaining strap is adjustable and down near the finger-guard. I like it, though it rattles when I walk, I need to work on the liner.

Robert do you put a molded kydex liner in your gear.

I'd like a sheath that was like a normal kydex with friction retention with a nylon outer with pocket and jump proof retaining strap. just so you can squat down to do stuff and not risk the blade sliding out of it's place. But doing up that retaining strap is a pain if your using the blade frequently.

Cheers

I bought a RD6 recently and the sheath I got seemed pretty well made. I too did not like the velcro retaining strap. I replaced it with a spec-ops small survival sheath and after some modification to the liner it fits perfectly. The pouch however, had a tear in it. I was pretty mad about this. I got the last one from T.A.D. in small OD and their turnaround time is pretty slow, so I will just fix it myself or just remove the pouch altogether, I dont know.

I think the best place for any retaining strap is next to the hilt. This position will prevent the sharp blade from sliding out. It also makes it easier to unsnap it with one's thumb.
