RANT: Dirty Stinkin' Thieves

Here's hoping the thief can sense and benefit from the vibrations in the blade, and that his life and the lives of others involved move in a positive direction.

there's a special place in hell reserved for people who steal knives. i've had many knives stolen but none of my HI blades. totally sucks man.

You're spot on, Howard. I'm going to miss my knife (as well as the 9" thick dictionary they stole as well:confused:). However, it's not a big issue. It's the act of the theft that bothers me more than what they took. If my PK is a catalyst in turning a lowlife into a productive member of society, then I'm all for it. These blades will last lifetimes. They pass through our fingers for mere moments of the hourglass. It was eventually going to end up in some one else's possession. I just hope that they do good with it.

Sorry to hear man, that really sucks that some dirt bag would do that, but what comes around, goes around. His time will come.

Your a better man than I ...

... than most of us

I sincerely doubt that. I know the calibre of the forumites here. Just like in the old Avis commercials, "When you're #2, you try harder."

...It's the act of the theft that bothers me more than what they took...

I've had items stolen and felt the violation and outrage. Probably the same feelings would arise tomorrow if something worked hard for or valued highly was stolen.

Sometimes I try to outwit the thieves by giving away my favorites. Once I give them away I laugh, thinking "You can never take it from me now."

There have been some breakins recently in the neighborhood where Red Flower and I are currently living. The neighbors are starting to organize a neighborhood watch. I attend the meetings when possible and share my previous experience organizing a block watch and being a block captain. It's not in the cards for me to play that role now, but having a sense of community does help reduce the antisocial activity.

These things worried me more when I had young children to care for and was struggling to make ends meet. Then a loss translated directly to hardship for my kids. Now the kids are on their own, so a theft only hurts me and Red Flower. We can take pretty good care of ourselves, at least for now. That makes it easier to attempt to take a dispassionate attitude. Maybe that's why so many religious orders insist on celibacy.

Here are a couple of quotes from guys with no kids. Something to think about and weigh in the balance with life's other concerns.

Jesus - Matthew 6:19 said:
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal...

Ryokan - wikipedia article said:
One evening a thief visited Ryōkan's hut at the base of the mountain only to discover there was nothing to steal. Ryōkan returned and caught him. "You have come a long way to visit me," he told the prowler, "and you should not return empty-handed. Please take my clothes as a gift." The thief was bewildered. He took the clothes and slunk away. Ryōkan sat naked, watching the moon. "Poor fellow," he mused, "I wish I could have given him this beautiful moon."

Honor and self-perfection can also be pursued while defending possessions. My prayer is that I make the right choice at the right time, for my development and the development of other sentient beings.

Wow Mr. Wallace, that's profound. I'm gonna read that a few more times and let it soak in good. I believe it might help in todays trying times.

I especially love the naked man watching the moon. If I try that I suspect the neighbors are gonna call it in though.

Course they aren't too close so maybe when the moon is out they won't notice my attire or lack thereof.

Seriously good stuff.

Never been there Steely. I always keep my knives within arms reach. Not your fault as far as I'm concerned, but may your blade cut deep the filthy thief that pilfered it.

Also, I never noticed your location until now. I was born and grew up in Columbus, Indiana. Providence, your thief will find punishment.

...If I try that I suspect the neighbors are gonna call it in though...

Things could be deeper than we suspect. Perhaps Ryokan just wanted some quality naked time appreciating the moon, and the thief was just an excuse to keep the neighbors off his back.

;)

Problem with stolen knives is they never end up in a pawn shop or on flea bay. Most thieves aren't that smart to understand the real value of something. They see street value, which is most likely where your knife will end up, until it goes into evidence at a PD or is broken and discarded in the bushes because it wouldn't pry open a beer bottle.

Guns, jewelry, electronics, all never end up in places where they are seen by good folks again.
