Rare Earth Magnets

I got a few off of ebay. Fun to play with...be careful tho, they can pinch!!

In newer houses with steel studding they'll find (and stick to!) the studs; also you can hold them to a wire carrying current and it'll be a quick and dirty ammeter .

I recall seeing some sculptures with them. Some guy tied string or small cable to a magnet, then suspended it in mid air, with another magnet in a frame, about an inch from the first. There was no cable between the two, just air. He had some that looked like a harp, really neat, It's on my list of things I'd like to play with someday. Will crush a pencil!! Dang!

Guys, thanks for all the info. I guess I better give some more thought to this idea, I dont want anyone getting hurt. I had'nt thought of the knife going through the sheath. I see guys with neck knives in leather sheaths "blade down" (buckskinner types). Does "blade up or down" much matter in consideration of getting injured? Would using heavy leather or rawhide offer enough protection? Anyway, I'll probably get some magnets to play with and see what develops. Thanks again for the help and advice!

Better keep those babies away from your wallet! It's embarrassing to try checking out at the grocery store with a blank strip on all your cards... :o

A few years back my brother and I salvaged some old mainframe computers and drives. The magnets on those drives are just plain scary! They'll suck a ball pein hammer across the bench from a foot away. The little magnets from 3.5" drives are much easier to deal with and are pretty strong.

But if I didn't have a bunch of drives stacked all over I'd order a few. They really are fun to play with once you figure out how not to get your fingers between the magnet and your vise... :D I'm sure you considered this but if you use a magnet in your sheath be sure to separate it from the blade with a thin layer of leather or whatever.

You have to keep in mid too what your neck knives are to be used/worn for, just like any other piece. Most of our neckers are kinda jazzy damascus pieces that are sharp, funtional & decorative (I hate to use the word jewelry). Let's be honest, there are many knife/sheath combos that (if tragic circumstances occured) could injure the wearer if care and caution is not used. Just like any other tool.

I bought the smallest of the rare earth magnets along with the cups and non friction discs. These things are remarkably strong.
