Rare(ish) Ones

Outstanding swonut! I see more than a few rare birds in there. Nice woodpecker and 2-finger karda!

Thanks for starting this thread, Bartlax4. I should have thought to do that myself. All the responses here just show me what a bunch of cool cats we have around here. I am not a collector at all (though I appreciate those of you who are, since you can do so much more to support Andy than I can), and I suppose part of my question is because I don't know what limitations there might be with some of this stuff... or whether the only limitation was the one in my head. Sounds like the one in my head is the only one I have to worry about. 😄

Duder said it perfectly. People buy knives for 3 reasons
1- They need it ( them ) as tools for work or play.
2- They collect. They may use all, some or none.
3- They are speculators. Hoping to sell for a profit down the road.

Based on the quantity of Fiddleback's many forum members buy sell or trade. We seem to fall into the collector category.
I now have seven FF. Two I don't want to use. There so beautiful. I want to keep them in pristine condition. My other 5 have all been used. A lot.

Just like in the art world. Investors usually consider themselves experts. They will speculate that the artist or craftsmans reputation, will grow over time! They are also hoarders. Thay will buy as much as they can to keep supply low. And hope that the reputation and scarcity of something creates value. Rare is only rare if someone thinks it is, and is willing to put there money were there mouth is.

I am a Collector. I use 70% of my knives. I keep 20% pristine. 5% are investments. I'm a knife guy, and proud of it.

While I hope for all the best for Andy and all at Fiddleback Forge, I also hope that the world of FF doesn't become like that of Busse, with an amazing amount of user-quality knives in the hands of a few and the resale market values held in an artificial manner. We're a long ways from there and the Flea Market helps keep us all honest.

Share the love, don't hoard it. But do with your knives as you please.

Vance-

Unless my eyes deceive me that is a 3/32 tapered tang hiking buddy which Andy told me someone bought off his hip at Blade Show. There are only two of those 3/32 tapered tang hiking buddies—mine is the other. However, yours was the guardless and mine has the guard, making them both one-of-a-kind as far as actual blade specs.
