rare /or becoming rare wood

No ones said morning wood yet?

Ironwood is pretty rare over here in England but its getting easier to get although I can see it getting rarer soon, as its popularity grows its going to get harder to get and the prices will rise which will lead to poaching (right term?). Snakewood I think will become more rare due to it becoming more available and getting popular.

As said though 'fossils' will eventualy run out. Sea cow, walrus, whale, mastodon, mammoth will all run out. Sure there are still walruses (walrye?) and whales but they take ages to fossilise and as I said once the popularity rises more people will want it, the price will rise and people will go to greater lenghts to get it. Probably wont be long before museums are robbed!

What we need to do is to find some other forms of good looking handle material so we have back ups. Whats Toucan beak like?

Jamie

i dont know oosik penis works for some people why not o beak or two-m

I'm not sure about the others...but Ironwood isn't really rare, its prices are just hyped up, but I guess it could be because of the wood's demand.

Toucan beak is soft- almost like leather. They are fruit eaters, their beaks don't need to be very tough. I doubt it would make a very good handle material. And I believe toucans are a protected species anyway. :D

Amboyna burl is scarce, especially tight flower figure. I'm down to my last 13,000 pounds in the srorage building and will not be replacing it when gone.

Rare in my experience is TRUE Honduras rosewood burl. It's like the best ironwood burl on steroids and a slight touch of purple here and there.

Desert Ironwood is illegal to harvest in Mexico too but being illegal doesn't mean much in Mexico. Desert ironwood only grows in the Sonoran desert in Mexico, New Mexico, Arizona and southern California. It takes 60 years for a tree to fully mature.

Is this D. Stevensonii? I've never seen the burl, but I like the normal material. I've worked with a little bit of cocobolo burl, but that's it for the rosewoods.

Yep...I love it when folks use botanical names!! I've been chasing it for years, but always turned out to be dark amboyna burl when I chased down a rumor. Came across some a few years ago at a wood turning expo I exhibited at. Got about 400#s. The sellers told me it was harvested by the local Indians from tree stumps left after logging years ago. Small burls and caps and it was fairly dry so story could have been true....I like to think it was. I stabilized quite a bit and it took the process real well. I find that it works great without the stabilizing, too.

I'll be putting some up later in the classifieds when I get time. Just got back to Georgia and dealing with some swampy crawl space and wet garage all week.

Actually I found a photo of the rosewood burl. This is a lighter shade and it comes in darker flavors as well. This scale set is NOT for sale. Have no idea why that image didn't post. It's linked to my sight.

Beautiful material. It does look kinda like the cocobolo burl I used (but way nicer).

Tell me when you do :). I'd also be interested in odd shapes/sizes for boxes.

Kamagong is rare. It's very hard to get. If you find some get it. It's very similar to macassar ebony though.
