It really is a cool old Russell. I was amazed at how thick and "buttery" the stag looks. This knife belongs to TBose and someone once told him they thought the stag had been replaced at some point. Don't think so...the stag has brass "bleed" deep into the edges where it meets up with the liner. You can see it in the images I shot.

If that stag was replaced it was done 80 years ago. I probably haven't seen 6 of these in all the years i've went to NKCA shows, they are very rare.

Wow, and I thought my 1890's version was cool!!!!

I have forwarded the pics to Lee Roark who is a Russell expert.

Tony,

I have a connection with the company historian and archivist for Russell. I'll send him a link to this and see if he can come up with an answer.

Who is that, Blues? I have some Barlows I wouldn't mind asking about! Would he mind a contact??

Tony,

On page 211 of Levine's Guide (4th edition) there is an image of the easy open locking blade barlow in stag. (I'm guessing you've checked that already, but you may want to check with Bernard Levine if you haven't.)

I can't speak for him so out of respect I won't publish his info without permission. However, if and when I hear from him I'll point him to this and perhaps he'll make himself available. Best I can do at the moment.

I really hate you guys! Just about the time I think I have this life thing figured out, and I stop lusting for something, you post photos of the most beautifull barlow I ever laid eyes on.

I want it.

I'll trade you my first born for it.

About 6 foot, 34 years old, strong, good teeth, answears to the name of John. Good worker, just feed him red meat.

I want that knife!:D

I turned down a bag full of money one time for it but I like it. Had I took the money it would be gone and so would the knife.

Look up there...I added mag'ed and cropped images for a closer look at the stag.

Tony,

Here's the info that I passed along to you on the phone this morning.

For everyone else, this info comes from the historian/archivist for Russell:

Nice knife. I have one myself, but in poor condition. It is not in the 1928 or earlier catalogs. It is in the 1930 catalog but not in the 1935 or later catalogs. So I would date it around 1930. It is the No. 76 Stag Fisherman.

That certainly is one nice Barlow the stag is outstanding, It's got my name (Russell) written all over it, that would definately be the type to add to my collection.
