recieved rat 1 folder yesterday. i was impressed with handle and fit but when i opened blade i almost fell over, in large bright lettering was the word TAIWAN on blade. never did i expect to see this on an ontario never mind the rat line

Yes, they are made there. It is one of the best knives out there for the money IMO. I have one and really like it. :)

Robbie Roberson.

I have one too. Great fit and finish and tremendous value. There was a time that made in Japan meant junk. Times sure have changed.

Taiwan actually puts out some pretty good quality blades. I have two of the Rat folders and love them. As solid a lock-up as I've ever seen in my price range [of course I've never held a Hinderer or Chris Reeve] but they're not in my price range at present.

And what does that mean in your opinion 'made in taiwan' ?
The RAT folder is the best buy for the money!
No blade play at all! Something that you cannot say for a lot of Spyderco's.

I bought the first one I could lay hands and love it! Stout, good grip and beefy blade. No play what-so-ever.

So what's wrong with Taiwan??? As long as the quiality is there.

I have a non serrated and that was a mistake on my part! But all in all the knife is a workhorse!!! I hope in the future they make the same knife style with G-10 scales and maybe D2 or 154cm steel. But when I know I have to be rough with a blade: scraping/prying/hacking... I grab my Rat 1 folder... L8R/~baba~

And we all know the quality and functionality of a knife is measured soley on how much blade play it has.

If its a good knife from Taiwan its still a good knife. besides acording to several articles i have read over the past decade or so the quality of taiwan steel is on a strong upward trend. several big name companies produce good quality lines in this region.

I don't think there's any doubt that there are some really good knives made offshore,i think some people would just prefer that their knives be made in America. i've read a couple of reviews and it would appear that the rat 1 is a good one. later, ahgar

You are jumping to conclusions!
Blade play tells me a thing or two about the way a knife is put together.
I have giving the RAT folder a hard time for months and there is
still no play at all. Chapeau Bas!!!!!!!!! that's workmanship.

Are you comparing Spyderco liner-locks to the RAT folder, or Spyderco lock-backs?

Blade-play in a liner-lock is dangerous!
Blade-play in a lock-back (depending on your definition of "blade play") is a non-issue.

I am talking about side to side blade play and I think that's allways an issue.

Yes, but in this case blade play is a functional issue with liner locks, and an aesthetic issue in lockbacks.

But it is equally an issue of percieved quality.

Personally, I've never seen a Spyderco liner-lock or lock-back with side-to-side blade play.

 Me either. I assumed he was referring to the slight up and down play in a lot of their lock backs, which is a total non issue. To me, even comparing this Rat whatever folder to Spyderco, and especially suggesting that it's a more quality folder than what Spyderco puts out is totally absurd. Granted I've never used this particular folder, but I know enough about it to make a decent guess.

You've never seen a Spyderco with side to side blade play. That proofs
nothing! Side to side blade play comes to much with the SS Spydies.
And without an adjustable pivot pin, there's nothing you can do about it.
Dont get me wrong, I like most Spyderco models. I own 9 of theme.
The Stretch is my hunting folder, it cuts like a razor.

If I was referring to vertical play, I would have called it that way.
You are talking about the quality of a knive that you have never held
in your hands ( RAT whatever folder). Please keep on making "decent guesses".
