RAT 1 lock up failing

Decent hatchets don't cost much, get a hatchet or axe.

Distinguish, if you will, between batoning for fun, batoning for practice, and batoning due to necessity (no better tool available).

Part of the mental aspect of survival is improvising - using what you have to meet the needs that you identify. In that context, "Use the right tool" is meaningless if the "right tool" is not available.

The current leading published experts on survival teach batoning, although not with a folding knife.

I don't characterize that as a failure of the knife.
Not to get all preachey, but I think while batoning is fun, it's really unnecessary. It is not something I would ever do with a folder... Unless it's a folder I didn't like and was trying to break, I guess.

I have seen the same videos on you tube and I believe one suggested using a wedge after a starter cut. I usually only use small twigs and such for fire so I cannot speak using a wedge.
