Basically the title says it all guys... how can the Rat 1 have the amazing reputation it has when it costs so little? From what I gather of so many opinions on the forums and YouTube it can hold it's own and stand next to some Spydies, BMs and Bokers etc. that cost 3 times as much!
Most likely I'm gonna get one regardless of what is said here 'cause I need a good workhorse so I can stop using my real babies haha.
Rat 1 lovers out there let me hear it, and haters I wanna know your side of the story too :)

I have one with serrations and one without. This is the first knife that you can actually use and sharpen the serrations! I love my RAT 1. They are built like a more expensive knife--AUS8 isn't the best steel, but holds an edge well and sharpens easy.

So people who say it is almost impossible to sharpen even after 3 attempts with a Spydie Sharpmaker... they're talking out of somewhere other than their mouth right? Thought so... lol

I bought one in plain edge to try out. A week later I got 3 more for my other kits. This knife functions great. No blade play , smooth operation , easy to maintain , and nice blade and handle design. I'm thinking of getting the Utilitac also ( same price thereabouts).
I haven't carried my other folders in weeks since getting these. They just work.

There is a lot more problems reported on some popular $150+ folders.
Good, simple designs with good build quality using decent materials is all we really need.
Most of the "upgrades" are for fondling instead of using.
Touch up the edge on a regular basis regardless of the steel.

Rat-1 folder is an excellent knife for work. As noted the steel they use has poor edgeholding but it is easy to sharpen to a wicked edge. Square spine is good for scraping, too

I love mine.

Beat the hell out of it, and she takes it all day long with a smile.

My only complaint is that the strength and solid feel of the knife make you want to use it for things the blade steel really can't handle. ;)

The AUS8 is the only weak point but it's a $40 knife, so I really can't complain.

Sharpens easy enough though.

I had one, then sold it. It is definitely one of the most hyped knives of the past couple of years, but I didn't find it lived up to it.

Great knife. It can take a beating and will ask for more. Very smooth and solid knife

I have had my Rat 1 for about a year and I find it to be a great work knife. It fits my hand very well and I find the blade shape very versatile. For the cost I never think twice about using it .I am not a fan of FRN but as far as FRN scales go the scales on the rat are not bad . The lock up on mine was pretty late right out of the box but hasn't moved much in a year of use. It has never had any blade play .It came with a centered blade and stayed that way until I took it apart. I had a heck of a time to get it to center again but I finaly got it and learned a few things along the way. I don't think you will regret getting one . I also recommend the UTLITAC 2 and the ENLAN EL-02 for work knives.

my Rat with G-10 scales and a acid soaked stonewashed blade.

I agree. It's not a bad knife, but there's nothing special about it I see.

I love mine! Strong, smooth quick deployment, solid lock up, decent steel for the money, strong pocket clip, FFG, feels great in hand. While there may not be much that's 'special' about it, the fact that it doesn't have any major down sides and does it's job well and reliably for around $30 dollars is special enough for me. Here's a video of one that saw deployment and came back alive (mostly).

I have two and still can't get over the fact they only cost $30 plus shipping. I don't think they are any more "hyped" than the Opinel 8 folders of which I bought one because BladeForums members convinced me of their greatness!

It's a lot of knife for the money IMO.

I've always heard so many good things about them, so I decided to buy one and see for myself.
I haven't put it to much use yet, but I am impressed with the knife itself. Great blade shape and size, even grinds, came very sharp out of box, perfect blade centring and locks up at exactly 50%
I like the handle shape, fits well in my hand and decent grip on the FRN.
I would say that was a $30 well spent.

I never bought one even though I was always intrigued by it.
I believe the main reason I never did was because of the steel! I had an American Lawman and a Volcan Coronado that share the same AUS-8 and never really liked it.
I can't really explain it. It seems like a thick but also very maleable steel! Don't know if this is the best explanation, I'm not in any way a steel expert:D
Anyway, in that price range I much prefer 8 or 9cr13mov and with that steel you can find cheaper and probably equally good knives like the Enlan EL-01.
However, due to the many positive reviews on the Rat1, I believe it is a safe bet for you to get one.
Just my 0.02$

Have one.

Best folder for the $ currently in the market.

Flips open nice, locks good, feels good in the hand, has 4 way carry, and is built solid. Oh, and did I mention I paid around $25 each?

What's not to like.

It makes a great EDC beater knife. Will take the abuse, and cheap to replace when you go too far.
